Mowing 2 acres

Correct me, if I am wrong, but most of the finish mowers that I have seen are 4 wheeled. So, the tractor is not supporting anything.

Additionally, I have seen several 60" finishing decks that claim to need only a 15 HP tractor.

I still am looking at the 38" deck, primarily to cut the ditch bank along the state road. The ditch is easy to walk along, just a bit too steep to drive a CUT.

Is there a trick to measuring the angle of a ditch bank? Coach Doheny was my Geometry and Trig teacher in high school. I could brush off the cobwebs and calculate the complementary angle of a right triangle.

(Math was great, especially during football season!)

15HP on a 60" I can't swear to. But a single cylinder 16 HP B&S can do it. As can a 16 HP Kohler single or twin and a B&S Vanguard Twin on a two wheeler.

Please tell us about the trailer rim / tire combination you chose. I was thinking about some 13 inch ford focus rims and but I cannot understand what ag tire to choose. Can you help? I have a bcs 605 with 10 inch rims [5.0-10 TP B 17 ag tires]and would like to get the machine higher off the ground

Oldmech: Have you considered using a gravely finish mower on the front of the BCS 605 plus working sulky? I understand you use gravely and BCS equipment and I thought you might know whether the PTO rotation, speed, shaft size and shaft height might be compatible in this combination. Do you think the gravely deck might provide better clipping dispersal than the BCS deck does. I believe the 38 inch BCS deck was designed for use with the bagger. I do not have a bagger and I can attest that the clipping dispersal on my 38 inch BCS is abysmal.

Hi! Gravely and Grillo have the same rotation. BCS Wrong or bad rotation. I can use Gravely implements with my Grillo I make a special adaptor. I dont have the 50 inch Gravely rotary mower but make fine job. I use one last year.

I have a SEP Mainline mower. This one was side discharge pushing long cutting in row Bad job. I remove the side discharge Make a round steel plate for replace the side discharge. So the blade cut and recut mulch in fine small parts Make a better job. Mulching is good for lawn . Make food and help to keep moisture. May be you can modify your 38 inch BCS deck for make a mulch mower.

I think for two acres you need a sulky . Some years ago I make one wheel sulky I like it.

I have seen 50 inch gravely mowing decks for sale and I am pleased that you know that they work well. Thanks for telling me that the BCS-Tractor/Gravely-Mower combination will not work.

So I am back to making the BCS-Tractor/BCS-Mower combination distribute clippings well. I have built many chutes for the right side of my BCS mowing deck. I force all clippings out the right side of the deck, attempting to get good clipping distribution. The results have been terrible. I was encouraged that my clipping distribution failures paralleled the work of a talented machinist, Oldmech. Good clipping distribution is difficult.

Thank you for sending the image of your side-discharge deck modified into a mulching deck. Tomorrow I will close the right-side discharge on my 38" BCS deck with a steel plate and see if I can mulch and distribute clipping satisfactorily.

Your gravely tractor image shows modified rim and tire. Do you have any comments about changing the BCS tire size from 5.0-10 TP B 17 to a larger rim and tire that might increase ground speed?

I have purchased a BCS working sulky.

I have purchased a BCS sickle-bar mower. I will sickle-bar mow most of the 3 acres once every 6 weeks managing the grass like a hay crop. I hope that the regrowth will easily grow through the residue and that I can mow through the grass and residue on the second third and fourth cutting. We will see.

Just a thought, Gravely did make a left hand rotation 30 deck. Now I have never done and Im not sure it can be done, but lets say one was to put a left hand rotation deck on a BCS with a right hand rotation blade or a right hand rotation deck with a left hand blade, something to look into? The left rotation boxes are old and the left blades are hard to come by but they still exist. The wheels on the above Gravely look to be for the optional gear reduction units available on non swiftmatic (8speed) units, usually the L models.
