I am planning on using an ASV SR80 to clear a 40 acre site. I know this machine works well for leveling, clearing, mulching and tree cutting, but I would also like to use it to mow some high grass. So I'm wondering what I can expect from a mower attachment on a track machine. I don't expect to a fine cut, but I was hoping to cut down a field to a nice even 4 inches.

It can be done, but your turns on a track machine will be leaving some marks.

I have a front mounted brush hog on my Power Trac PT425. It is run by a hydraulic motor rated at 8GPM and 2500PSI. It will obliterate anything under an inch and a half.

Here's a couple links to some videos of it in operation:

If my little 25HP PT425 can do this, I think your ASV SR80 should have no problems powering a brush hog. The hard part will be finding a unit that runs off of hydraulics for a decent price.

When I priced skidsteer brush cutters about 6 months ago, I was seeing $4000-6000 for the cutter. You might be able to rent one locally for maybe $100/day if you only need to use it occasionally.

Depending on your overall plans you might also consider getting a cheap, old, 2wd tractor with a basic cutter. A functional tractor and cutter could probably be had for under $4000 total.
