I can't go with a 1/2 ton. One thing that doesn't get closely looked at when the marketing folks say how much they can tow, is how much payload they can haul. Once you put a heavy trailer on the back end, you have a fair amount of tongue weight to go with it. That really cuts into what you can actually put in the pickup. Those with a family, a batch of tools, maybe a 4 wheeler in the back, with a pretty good sized trailer, you are going to have to leave some of the family home with the 4 wheeler. That is why I go with 3/4 ton. Hauling capacity is a paramount concern. And when I need to tow something, if I want to throw a lot in the back of the pickup, it will not be a problem.
And going with the OP mention of an F150 going for nearly $60K. I got my 2015 2500HD 6.0L, 6 speed auto, 4.10 ratio, Z71 LT Double cab with 6.5 box for about $39K brand new, that included the Auto Armor paint protection package and the Auto Armor rust proofing and undercoating package, and dealer threw in a Line-X bed job for free. Why anyone would pay more than that for a new 1/2 ton, is beyond me to figure out. And my 2500 has a GVWR of 9500 lb and a GCWR of 20,300 lb. With two people, a couple hundred lb of tools in the bed, and full 36 gallon tank, I still have just over 2300 lb of payload capacity available.
