Just for kicks, my brother gave his F150 specs to a couple of auto brokers... the deal he had with the dealer was less than the 3 brokers...

Still, it was nowhere near the 10k off MSRP I've seen here at TBN

I can't go with a 1/2 ton. One thing that doesn't get closely looked at when the marketing folks say how much they can tow, is how much payload they can haul. Once you put a heavy trailer on the back end, you have a fair amount of tongue weight to go with it. That really cuts into what you can actually put in the pickup. Those with a family, a batch of tools, maybe a 4 wheeler in the back, with a pretty good sized trailer, you are going to have to leave some of the family home with the 4 wheeler. That is why I go with 3/4 ton. Hauling capacity is a paramount concern. And when I need to tow something, if I want to throw a lot in the back of the pickup, it will not be a problem.

And going with the OP mention of an F150 going for nearly $60K. I got my 2015 2500HD 6.0L, 6 speed auto, 4.10 ratio, Z71 LT Double cab with 6.5 box for about $39K brand new, that included the Auto Armor paint protection package and the Auto Armor rust proofing and undercoating package, and dealer threw in a Line-X bed job for free. Why anyone would pay more than that for a new 1/2 ton, is beyond me to figure out. And my 2500 has a GVWR of 9500 lb and a GCWR of 20,300 lb. With two people, a couple hundred lb of tools in the bed, and full 36 gallon tank, I still have just over 2300 lb of payload capacity available.

One thing about negotiations is no matter how good a deal you work there is always someone who will tell you that they drove away and the dealer paid them to take it off the lot. I've read a lot of forums and you have to take the stories with a grain of salt. How many people will tell you that they got taken, not me I got 24% below invoice " sure you did Pal"

I currently own two GM trucks and two Ford trucks... like them all.

He seldom carries much in the bed... that is what the dump trailer and stock trailers are for...

The weak link has been rated towing capacity and it seems like the twin turbo ecoboost with it's flat torque range is ideal for towing...

Of course... time will tell as to reliability...

I just bought a lease return 2013 F150 4x4 Reg cab for about 1\3 off sticker. It has low miles and is still under warranty. If you separate the needs from wants it really opens up options. It is an STX without a bunch of options but compared to my older Ram it is well equipped.

Forget the brokers.

He needs to know what a particular dealer has in stock, and an idea as to how long it has been in stock, and he needs to be somewhat flexible as to what he needs (vs. what he wants)

He needs to walk into the dealership about 4 or 5 days before the end of the month, or preferably, before the end of the quarter. Nearly all manufactures offer incentives
to dealers based on unit sales figures (in the case of Nissan, the incentives may also be tied to comparable sales of the nearest Toyota and Honda dealers), and these sales
figures are typically monthly, quarterly and/or annually (but the programs are not static- they certainly can and do change from month to month and year to year)

If you walk into a dealership 4 or 5 days before the end of a sales period, chances are the dealer has not yet made his quota of sales, but may see it within reach. That is
when you will probably get the best deal.

The lease deals of VW are the least expensive I have ever seen...

He should look for a truck that is not only equipped with the max tow package, but one that also has the max payload package. It adds about 800 pounds to the payload. It is only available in the 6.5' bed, which is what he was going for anyway. The extra payload sure comes in handy, not just for in bed things, but for handling the tongue weight of his trailers when loaded.

I could be wrong... is the Max Payload available with King Ranch?
