I was checking out my under carriage and saw a cotter pin that appears to do nothing. Does anyone else have this?

I'm wondering if that is a drain hole for the clutch area? If oil starts to drip out, a seal is leaking. The cotter pin keeps it from plugging as it moves around.

Agree. I've seen this technique used on many machines to keep a weep hole clear. Works good on all but the dirtiest conditions--Like the bottom of a tractor.

You can give it a giggle every once in a while to make sure it's loose and free to move.

Yes, that is exactly what it is for! To break surface tension on any moisture or fluid inside the case and to allow it to drip out.

I had noticed the stray "cotter pin" a couple days after I got the tractor..... called the dealer and sent him a picture of it, leaving him a message asking if I could / should pull it out.. ...

He called me back within 2 minutes Immediately saying "DON'T pull it out !!" He then explained its use.
