Its real easy - take the hood off - should slide right off the front hinges and unhook the headlight wire. Then you will have easy access to the cover(s) one if a single Cyl and 2 if a twin cylinder.

I have done both neighbors machines and adjusted valves as well in about an hour. I also just use blue silicone "rtv" sealant instead of buying gaskets - its available at auto parts stores.

For adjusting valves, (with valve cover off) remove sparkplug, turn over engine until piston is at the top (stick a screwdriver into plug hole and turn engine by hand until its at the top) then use a feeler gauge (again from auto parts store) to check the valve clearance. Should be 005-007" if in that range you are OK. If more than ..008-010" I would adjust. It takes several trys to get it right..

You can find tips on line about this too.

My question is in regaurds to the Nikki Carburetor, (49888n g02701) does the needle seat onto the plastic or is there suppost to be more to it than seating on the plastic, say an insert? rebuilt carb but didn't replace main jet. and it's flooding into crankcase will it do this if main jet is faulty?

Needle valve seats on the plastic. If it is flooding the crankcase, then the needle valve isn't seating, or the O-ring that goes around the fuel inlet above the plastic insert isn't sealing.

there is no reason to ajust float correct, not that it is even possible

The only way to adjust float height if it is not correct is to replace the warped float.

which I have done. guess it all comes down to the Main jet for it's loose in it's hole, I'm talking about the little brass piece that has the O-ring on it. that goes on TOP of the plastic body that seals in the bowl. I have to ask these questions because it was a ****-it I found and didn't see where it came from even though I could only find one place it could go, I have this inkling of doubt & frustration is setting in. Must wait now till tomorrow to get part...........

Awit....if I understand what you're saying and remember right, that jet should go up the tube from underneath.

I put my old craftsman carb together and accidentally had the jet in the hole on top...and it did run, but not very well.
Strange that it sets in that hole on top like it belongs there.
