Over in the hat thread, Larry points out that most farmhouses have a "mud room" where boots, etc. can be taken care of. Mine does not.

We're renovating right now, and I see an opportunity to add a room that will not only accommodate muddy feet, but will greatly reduce the number of times I get yelled at. If you have one, I'd like to know how it's set up, what you like about it, and what you'd change if you could.

We don't have a mud room, but if I did I think I would want a metal grate area, complete with drain and kitchen type sprayer (boot wash).

Nothing worse than coming in, taking your boot off, and stepping in cold water that's melted off someone else's boots.

You would need to design the catch basin to collect the mud and debris from going down the drain, but I think it would be pretty nice.

Also plenty of space to hang up wet coats, coveralls, etc. I would make it larger than you think - because these types of rooms become catch-alls.

Room for a sturdy chair to tie your boots, put on coveralls, etc.

If you are running water and a drain for the floor grate - having a slop sink would be great for cleaning up before you make it inside, washing vegetables, etc.

Those are my ideas. Good luck!
