Check to see if the Blue spruce is acid-loving. Lots of evergreens are. In that case, pine needles might be best.
In some areas, hardwood mulch can lead to black mold. Once it gets started, it's almost impossible to contain. The state had to move out of and is tearing down the old MVA building not far from me - black mold!
We use stone chips over weed barrier cloth in some spots and pine needles in others around out place.
Yep, the pine needles do a fine job of killing the weeds!
