multi purpose handgun suggestions?

I've got the GP100 in stainless as well. It's a sweet gun! Like others have said, the 38 is a great plinking round and the 357, well...means business.

However, there's no way in the world I could use it to hunt. Anything over 30' and I'd be at best 50/50 with it.

BTW, got mine off a kid on the street for $40 about 15 years ago.

My next purchase will be a Taurus Judge. Shoots .45 Long Colt or .410 shotshell.

Taurus International Manufacturing Inc

Seems like an interesting combo.

Bought the new Ultralight version two weeks ago:D

Not a revolver guy, own a bunch of semiautos but the Judge impresses me..;)

Also got a Springfield XDM a few weeks ago...too large for carry- but dang - 17 rounds of .40:eek:

Ok, how easy to carry is a 357 with a 4" barrel? That seems to be a gun that would suffice for all the aforementioned jobs.

Icarry my .38 colt trooper, with a 4inch barrel. Not the easiest to conceal, except in an inside coat pocket.Id like to find a cheap detective ,they have two inch barrels.I mentioned this for the size reference,i would not hunt with a .38

How much are those going for? I have been wanting a 45/410 for quite a while

Yeah, I am thinking a semi is out for hunting.

Glock Model 20. I've taken a couple of deer with it out to 40 yards (you have the option of putting in a quality 5" barrel).

10mm is one of the most "all around" calibers that you can find IMO.

For a .357, nothing feels as good to me as a Smith 686.

A dozen years ago, or so, I was out hog hunting with a buddy of mine. He was up higher on a ridge, while I was on the other side of a bowl, down lower. He saw a hog and shot it in the neck with his 30-06 that didn't kill it. At the shot, I heard it coming my way. It was going to be close, so I pulled out my Ruger 357 with 6 inch barrel. It's similar to what I trained with in the Marine Corps, and I'm fairly comptent with it. Four of my six shots were in the head as it ran past me at 20 feet. The other two were hail marries as it ran off into the woods.

I chased it down and found it in a canyon. It was standing still, and probably mortaly hurt, but still on all four feet. I droped it with my 30-06 at 50 yards.

After that, I retired the .357 and got a .44 mag with a 12 inch barrel. I've shot five or six hogs with this pistol, and it's very effective. I only shoot them up close, and I'm sure of the shot when I take it. I like it because I can carry it in a padded case on the tractor or four wheeler and it's not in the way.

For personal protection and a pistol to carry, I'm a HUGE fan of the .380 Stopping power is for big game, for humans, just making noise is 99% of what's important. I have no intention or expectation of winning a shootout in my lifetime. Cops and miltary personal with years of training rarely hit who they are aiming at in gunfights. The reality is that it's very dificult to do.

What is effective is firing off a round. It really doesn't matter what direction you are pointing the weapon, just the noise of it will send the bad guys on their way.

Good luck,
Eddie

"Jack of all trades, master of none" As mentioned, I don't think hunting will go hand in hand with ease or comfort of carry. I have always been partial to the .357 and .44 callibers. They are easy to handload, and taylor to your needs from the 38 and 44 specials up to the magnum loads. there are also a lot of off the shelf bullets available for custom loads. For larger animals I would and do favor the 44. I have had a stainless Ruger Redhawk with the scope dovetails for nearly 20 years now. Works well on deer and with a 2X leopold scope it makes for a very precise tool out to 200 yards. The scope comes on or off in minutes and I have used it for many activities. Combat courses, bowling pin matches, 200M silouette and of course hunting. It's size and weight are maneagable, but it is more difficult to carry and certainly not concealed. My preference is crossdraw with a gun that large, and a shoulder holster when scoped. .357 with a shorter barrel would be a little easier to carry, but with a little less delivered energy and the lower inherent accuracy of a shorter barrel. As with all handgun hunting, shot placement is the key regardless of calliber. Within the accuracy limits of the gun and my skill level(50+yards?), I would have no problem hunting with a .40 or.45.

I think you would be far happier with 2 guns. One for carry, and one for hunting. I know I am:)

Good luck

Point that Taurus Judge loaded with buckshot and make some noise.
