It sounds like you are probably going to come out OK on this. A quick Google search will find you a cheap set of telescoping bore gauges for probably $20 or so..not the best but if you are careful and have access to a decent digital caliper or micrometer and can get repeatable readings you can check your cylinder for out-of-round and not have to spend too much on tools. For about $70-$80 you can get a cheap dial bore indicator set, again not the best and probably a gamble for the money but an option I'm just throwing out there.
You found an excellent deal on the flex hone, they are a much better way to go than using the cheap expandable hones in my opinion.

I have to ask...what does your buddy that took the coolant out have to say about all of this? Is he willing to kick in ($$$) on this? I know it can be a bad situation, it's exactly why i don't lend my stuff anymore.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've got a dial indicator that I've used for years. It may not be "to the gnats butt exact" but it could probably tell me the cylinder was out of round though....I see what your saying.

As far as the coolant drainer guy he said he felt bad and offered to help pay. I doubt I'll take him up on it though.....you see, I live around 1,000 miles from where I NORMALLY keep the tractor (I brought it home for these repairs). I normally leave it at the farm, and use it when I'm there which is only 3 or 4 times a year. The guy knew it needed more antifreeze with a hard freeze coming, so he was doing me a favor (without telling me) and replacing the antifreeze. I came to the farm early and unannouced while he was in town buying antifreeze......The Perfect Storm :( !

Glad that worked out, Chris. I did not know using HCl was commonly done to
remove aluminum from cyl walls.

As for the JD parts, I have not heard of any successes finding the right
pistons from anyone but a JD dealer. I did much better on pistons for my
last JD 6 mo ago......about $130 ea, with rings. Ya gotta shop around.

Man your right about the shopping around part. It took a while, but I was able to find this place John Deere Parts . They specialize in Yanmar tractors, but since my JD750 has a Yanmar engine they have what I need. The only exception is they don't have the intake gasket....they've had everything else I've needed though. And with these guys, the items arrive at my door the next day where JD dealer takes a week, costs more, and I gotta drive into town to get it  .

I ordered several items, so I may be off $5.00-$10.00 but the price on the piston was the same as what you paid. Piston w/pin and clips was around $95.00 and rings were around $35.00.

You don't need an intake gasket. RTV silicone does a better job for most
gaskets, but not the head gasket. RTV takes more time to apply, so it is
not the first choice in mass production.

Interesting source you found. JD would only sell me the pistons with the rings
installed for my last 4 engines. The older (non-EPA) engines had two
oversize pistons available, while my last one had only a .25mm O/S.

Old trick:
Put the radiator cap on the seat as a reminder.

But i NEVER fire a rig without checking all the fluid levels first and a look over.;)

I will never forget the day i pulled the engine oil dip stick and the gasoline just squirted out.

Good thing i didn't fire that up without checking it out first.
can you say BOOM boys and girls

I was also going to tell you that you can paint the cylinder walls with DYKEM
then push a piston ring up and down the cylinder and it will show any low spots and it cleans up with a rag and alcohol or brake cleaner

probably a little late with this post...but
