I reall like the MX5100 . I know some of you prefer gear drive M series but do think it would be wise for me a newbie to tractors with the HST? I driven standard transmission before but nev a gear drive tractor.

What is the difference between a Kubota MX5100hst and their L5040?

The L5040 is only available with the Glide-Shift transmission... no HST. So in this case, the more basic MX model has the hydro drive and the more deluxe Grand L has the gear drive (albeit a very fancy one). Looks to me that the MX5100, L5040 and L5240 all have the same turbo V2403 engine. Dunno why they didn't just offer a GST option on the L5240 like they do on other Grand L models. This also accounts for some of the price differences and probably the difference in weight.

I believe most new owners/operators will find the HST works better for them and a LOT of experienced owners/operators find the same. I prefer the Grand L over the MX, but no doubt it is a very competent tractor with several very happy owners on TBN.

Yes, I really like our geared M8540, but still find the L5740 easier to use.

I've got both HST and shuttle and each has their place. What I would love to see (for me) is Kubota to redo their shuttle shift layout. I would much rather have a pedal set up like the HST for the shuttle operation. That way for loader work you would never have to shift the lever. One hand on the steering wheel with the other on the loader lever. With a power shuttle it should be easy to do. Plus it would be great if they included the new throttle up option on the loader lever to speed up the loader.

Agree with that... that would be pretty neat. However it seems they are going away from a gear-drive option, at least on the higher horsepower Grand L's. Maybe 50 hp is about the limit for the current GST transmission design. If the Case-IH CVT were taking the market by storm, you'd probably see Kubota respond, but that doesn't seem to be happening, at least so far. Kubota had 2 expensive new product launches in the construction market right when it tanked (M59 and SVL); they now seem to be trying to get through the transition to Tier 4 before attempting any other big moves.
