Well, I filled it up this evening and calculated a better fuel consumption than I had originally though based on what the gauge was indicating. It looks more like 1 gallon/hr. Not too bad for the work I got accomplished. I cleared about 8 acres of dead cedar trees that had died due to a fire two years ago. I have five bus size piles to burn. Plus, mowed maybe 3 acres that hasn't been cut since the fire. Not bad for 5 hrs.
And, maybe 30 minutes of that was the wife driving it around. I really need to keep her away from it otherwise, she'll rack up the hrs.

Thanks Corl, I'll check with them re the ballast.

If the MX tank is anything like the L3400 tank was, it is not linear. It is kinda L shaped. You have more fuel than the gauge would lead you to believe.

I have the shuttle shift MX5100 and it still drinks a lot of diesel. 8 gal in two days of various work. 1st day was moving supplies with the forks and towing my 20' equipment trailer around. 2nd day I was running my PTO chipper with the RPM's up around 2,500 for 3 hours. It's nice that I found an off-road diesel pump not too far away from me. It's about .25 cents cheaper a gal. I probably burn just under a gal/hour when bush hogging the fields in the summer. That's running it at PTO speed.

My 5240 (I think the same engine as a 5100) has used between .7 - 1.2 gal/hr over the last 240 hours. I just started using a 35 gal barrel to fill the tractor so it will be harder to calculate usage till I get a flow meter, but I have checked every tank full until recently. It would be great if it used less fuel but I'm not surprised or disappointed with the usage.

First time seeing that gauge on the red line made me a little nervous. ;)

I do recall the old Perkins '152' diesel sipping fuel to the point where I'd forget to refill it was so infrequent..

That is the truth. I jumped on one of my 152s last weekend and couldn't remember the last time I filled it.

The fuel tank on the MX5100 is a funny shape. I have a wooden stick that is calibrated that I use to fill it up as the gauge is a bit non linear. I would have been happier if the tank was just larger. Have to top it up to get most of a days work out of it. Glad I don't have to be on it all day very often because of fuel.

Don't remember where I got it but there is a theoretical calculation for fuel use on a diesel tractor that is pretty close to what I use. The formula is Fuel consumption in Gal/hr = 0.044 X PTO hp. The HST mx5100 would be 1.87 gal/hr. When using the PTO at rated hp I am about 1.8.

Mines spending most of the winter in the garage.... it's not easy on fuel from what I can tell... but I've never even filled the tank yet. LOL I think there's like 8 hours on it.

I've noticed the three point not lifting as high as i think it did. I'm measuring approximately 27" off the ground at the lower link pins. Can any other MX5100 owners comment on this?

It's not even lifting the rotary mower's rear tire off the ground.

Don't forget your top link length will affect this a lot., As well as the hole the top link is pinned to on the tractor.. shorten the top link to make the rear end of the mower come up. It doesn't take much top length adjustment to make a big difference out there on the tail wheel. Also pin the top link in the lowest hole on the tractor to raise the tail of the mower.

Agree, let us know what you think after you shorten the top link. For fuel, I've found 1 gal/hr is a good rule of thumb for pretty much anything I'm doing over the course of a tank. But in shorter periods it varies a lot.
