Thanks John. Actually, the building in the background is an old pig building, and is in pretty bad shape. The big barn for the horses is a 105' x 75' timber framed structure that we are going to restore. The hay loft in the barn is HUGE /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for the tractor and all my other toys....they get there own six car sized machine shed.

Dave,

Nice looking tractor you've got there. In fact it looks just like mine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I love my 855 and I think you'll find it to be everything you'd hoped for and then some. Let me know if you have more questions about it. I have more or less taken mine apart and put it back together just to see what everything does and where it goes, etc. I spent the first few days going through all of the fluids, filters, etc. Have a great time tractoring.

I have been clarified on the adjusting of the MMM.
Here's a bit more clarification!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The 3 point hitch control lever (rockshaft) is what should raise and lower the mower deck. The FEL selective control valve should have no connection whatever to your mower deck.

The deck height control knob can only be adjusted when the deck is up. In other words, raise the deck up to make an adjustment, then lower it to see how much of an adjustment you made.

The deck height control does not adjust how high your deck will go up, but how far your deck will go down (ie cutting height). A full turn of the knob either makes a half inch or a full inch difference...I can't remember which. Clockwise will raise cutting height and counterclockwise will lower it.

Do not use the castor wheels to control the height of the deck. Once you have the deck at the cutting height you want, adjust the wheels so they are just off the ground...maybe a 1/4" to 1/2".

Good luck!! If you like yours as much as I like mine, you will be pleased.

OkieG,

The X55 series were available with a separate hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower the MMM. It is not connected to the 3PH. The cylinder works off the curl and dump circuit of the FEL. When lowering the MMM the MMM drops first and the bucket angles down just a little. When raising the MMM the bucket curls back to its stops before the MMM lifts. When the MMM is all the way up and the black adjusting knob turned all the way clockwise the MMM dos not move during FEL operation. There is also a pin on both sides of the bucket that can be inserted to keep the bucket from moving during MMM operation but this is not really necessary as the bucket moves very little.

DaveNay,

That's a nice looking tractor! I notice it has a 52 loader on it. I think they stopped making them in 1987. When I bought by 1987 755 in spring of 1988 (it was a left over) mine came with a 52 loader and the 1988 models came with the 70A loader. The 70A has integral parking stands where the 52 has separate legs. I also notice the bucket is black which probably means it is an replacement. I tried to get a bucket for mine last year. The Deere parts person gave me a great price of around $250. Then a day or so later she told me it was discontinued and no longer available. I've got an "after market" on order. Good luck with your 855.

755inNY,
Thanks for the x55 background information. Mine is a '97 model. My friend has a late 80s 855. Ours both work the same, as I described earlier, re: MMM operation. I didn't know there was another system. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Does the system require a FEL in order to use a MMM? Do you have to mow with the FEL installed? I thought DaveNay must have had something wrong when he told how his MMM raised. Very interesting. I stand corrected. Thanks again for the education.

DayeNay,
Don't let my previous comments confuse you. It is me who was confused, so please disregard.
You will enjoy your tractor. By the way, keep posting here on TBN. Since I own a 855, I look forward to x55 owner posts the most. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OkieG,

I think the separate hydraulic cylinder for the MMM was an option. The standard set-up used the 3PH as you described. The FEL does not have to be on the tractor to use the MMM. I don't use the FEL every day so it is off the tractor most of the time (except for winter). That's the beauty of JD. Attachments go on and off so easily. When I need the FEL I put it on and when I'm done I take it off. Much of my tractor use is mowing and the FEL is a disadvantage for maneuvering close to things. I do not usually take the MMM off when doing loader work.

Here is a page from the mower manual re: wheels. The decal on my deck is long gone. I just raise the wheels all the way up, adjust the mower to the cutting height I desire, then lower the wheels to just off the ground. Once is it set, you shouldn't have to mess with it much. One or both of the deck's rear attachment points will have a threaded rod as part of the connection. That is used to level the deck side-to-side.

Here's another page re: deck height adjustment.

DaveNay, I supply these pages in case you don't have a mower deck manual. You might find them useful.

755inNY,
My mower deck manual explains nothing about the seperate hydraulic setup DaveNay (and you?) have to raise/lower. I also get the impression it was an extra cost option.
