My Barn..... Finally !!!

Good Evenin Guys,
I have been dreaming about this day for the past few years ! Finally the day is fast approaching, instead of reading about other projects, many of them my friends on TBN, its finally my turn !

Here is what I will be building, yes I know it should be bigger and have this that and the other thing in it, but this is what my pocket book can bear !

It will be a 28 x 42 ft building. It will sit on a concrete slab, alaskan slab, 1 1/2 ft around the perimeter, and a full 6 " thick floor. The walls will be 10 ft high and 2x6 construction. I will have 3, 9 ft by 9ft doors with one drive through bay. The drive through bay will have a floor drain. So along the 42 ft wall facing my driveway, I will have 2 - 9ft doors. The remaining part of that wall willhave an 3 ft entry door and a 3 ft window. I at some point will partition the end of the building to accomodate my wood shop, which will be about 19 x 28 ft. The end of the building which will overlook the mountains across my field will have 4 windows spaced evenly across that wall.

I will be using trusses with a 1 ft over hang all around, the 8 x 12 pitch truss would give me a 10 ft wide room the length of the building with a 7 ft ceiling, although I may spend a few more bucks for the 9 x 12 pitch trusses and gain 2 ft in width and another 10 " in headroom...

On the backside of the building on the shop end I will have another window. and of course I will have the drive through bay door...

All the doors will have windows in the fourth panel up I believe...

Im going to go with and exterior staircase on the left side of the building, 4 ft wide with a landing up top to avoid using up any interior space. Both that door and the entry door into the shop will be glasson top for light and to see whats going on outside...

Concrete wise we are looking at about 20 yds, and one of my neighbors has promised me a very competative rate... will see...

The Room upstairs will also have two large windows that overlook the mountains...

Electrical and insulation will probablly have to wait until next year...

We are up to about 19 K in materials and it looks like labor will be running about 15 K so Im hoping the project falls somewhere in the 34 to 35 K range...:licking:

I have included some site pics, thats all I will be posting for photos for the next 3 weeks or so, until we get the bulldozer up their to level things out, thats about it for now !

i agree dont eat up space in side how ever have you thought about a hole on end so you could hoist things up from the finished space.

Also, with a view like you have, I would have to build a small deck off of one end of the 2nd floor. Doesn't have to be any more than a 10ftx10ft deck. That would be a great place to sit and sip on some more wine!!:thumbsup:

Glad to hear you are getting your shop/garage. Sounds like a nice building with good uses. Nice view you have across to the hills.

I thought of two things -
If you do staining and finishing in the wood shop, you might want to frame in an exhaust fan opening while building your walls. The fan sizes don't change much, so you could look up the rough opening of fan and frame in that size to make life easier down the road.

All your overhead doors are on eave sides of the building if I understand it correctly. With a steep pitch maybe you won't have too many mini-avalanches coming off the roof, but you will get a few. You may have to climb over or wade through a snow slide to get to your man door. They always come 30 minutes after you put the tractor away Once you partition the wood shop off, your garage area is basically a square, so gable end or under eave is about the same in terms of good space use and access. I would put two overhead doors on the gable end, nix the third overhead door and use the money elsewhere.

+1 on the Deck suggestion , somethin big enough for 2 chairs a small round table and an Ice chest of Beer and maybe even a tiny Hibachi grill. :licking: love the deck days !!!

9 ft wide doors-- I would like to suggest you consider 10 ft wide. I had 10 ft wide doors on my garage and I wouldn't have wanted anything less. My dump trailer is just 2 inches short of being 8 ft wide so in a 9 ft door that only gives you 7 inches of play off of center before you hit one side or the other. A 10 ft wide door with that size trailer gives you 13 inches of play.

Sounds like you put allot of thought into it and you'll have a good sized building when you done. Is it going to be for storage of the tractors and equipment, or will there be space for your woodworking tools?

The staining and finishing, large jobs would probablly be done on the garage section... some small stuff would be done in the shop...

About the snow, you do have a good point, but normally the way the wind blows up here, we dont normally have any huge slides for the most part, the wind is pretty much uninterupted coming out of the west and it usually blows like the dickens...

The gable end overlooking the field, south and west will be all windows for natural lighting for the shop, the other end will be the staircase to the second floor...

I really would have liked to go with 12 ft walls and 10 ft doors, but we are at a money crossraods, if you know what I mean...

Yep, some tractor storage in the garage section, and the shop should be about 19' by 27'. I will partition a wall to seperate the woodshop from the garage, and probablly put in a 6' by 8' opening with a sliding door...

The backside of the building, with a 10 ft wall could allways accomodate a shed roof for extra storage down the road !


Anyways, I will be posting some dozer shots within a couple of weeks or so, I know I kind of jumped the gun, but I was so happy to have started on the project that I had to share !

BTW, for the guys that are not aware, I have my little house deck just on the other side of the drive, so probablly not another deck !

I will definitely be following your project as I have almost the identical one planned for upstate NY in the next year or so (right now the project is for a 32 x 48', however, like you said, cost is the driving factor).

Sounds like your going to have an amazing shop once your finished. Will be far worth the time, effort, money. I love your paying attention to all those little details.

My one question how are you planning on heating your shop? Currently been working on my 40x64 and if i could redo the floor "afford it" i would put in floor heat from my wood burner. I didn't see where you had said anything about heat. Any nice project love the mts in the back ground.

Your new shop sounds excellent.

I agree with nwngunner - even if you just put heat pex piping in your slabs now for a couple of dollars, you don't have to hook it up for some time yet.

I did that with my original shop and really appreciate the warm floors I got when I could afford to put in the heating system ten years later.

When we had our barn built a couple years ago, we had 2-inches of rigid foam added around the perimeter of the floor and 2-feet under the floor. This should help if we later add heat. Did not cost much to do but I do not remember a number.

Sounds like a great barn. I have been told that if your barn is smaller than your land you will want more. :laughing: I do understand the cost constraints almost all of us deal with.

Sounds very nice. I built a 28'x30' building, and I wish it was the size of yours. I also wish I had storage above, but I went with flatter trusses and I don't have the head room. I thought about a lot of this stuff, but like you, money becomes a limiting factor at some point.

I heat mine with a forced air unit that hangs in the corner. Heats the place up in about 10 minutes from 40 degrees to 65 degrees. We are on LP so the company just came out and put in another tank for me. This is the cheap route and I'm sure in floor heat would be nice.

I am super jealous. Don't think about the limitations of money causing you to get less shop than you want, think about the luck of having enough money to get the shop you are getting. I mean, we would all have an ideal shop that most of us don't actually buy.

Some of us don't even get a shop at all.

Sounds like a great project .My barn originally was 24 by 36 and it has 10 ft to the bottom of the trusses.Ioriginally had 2 9 ft wide by 10 ft high barn doors in it for years.Inever really needed the high door height,so after years of opening the barn doors driving out the vehicles then closing them,i was pressured by the better halfto install regular garage doors and openers.I went with 7 ft high and made some transom windows for the top.Istill have one large swinging barn door 10 ft high in the rear for the tractor.
About 10 years after the original build i added another bay ,which is heated,and i use as my mechanic garage and welding area,i call it my man cave Building it tall like you aregives you lots of opportunities for adding on..good choice
With tall walls keep your studs close togeather [mine are 16oc] and i reccomend a row of blocking between the studs mid way to stiffin things up.A poorly built building with high walls ,has alot of shake and rock and roll to it.Good choice on 2 by 6 mine are all hemlock,i obtained at a mill i worked at years ago.
thought id shoot a COUPLE pics of mine,yours will be about the same height i think ,but the footprint of my "original BARN is much smaller than yours.
I also spent a whole winter in my spare time ,building my own trusses,crazy huh:confused2:

Hi Scotty,
Wow, how excited you must be to finally start your barn.
From reading about everything you are going to do, it sounds like yours will be super well built with a 6" slab, large doors, an "upstairs", and fully insulated. You might want to do the insulation at the same time rather than waiting. I know mine sure made a difference in working temperatures. Anyway, I'm looking forward to read about your barn.
