There was an earlier thread about the quantity of the walnut harvest this year; I focus on quality...
There is a English walnut tree near my house that produces HUGE nuts and I thought I would show them to you all.
The left being a standard walnut from a neighbors tree, the right from the tree I claim. These nuts are so huge that some can be opened by fingers and its easy to remove the meat in one piece.
Researching types of walnuts I did learn that the nuts are graded on size and percentage of meat in the shell. These would rate low in the later department as they are not "full" but sure are easy to pickup and shell.
A aunt also has a tree that gives large nuts like these.

I like all walnuts but I prefer the wild bitter tasting ones. Same with black berrys. Just what I was raised on I guess.

Oh that is sad! I have black walnut trees, and look forward to trying to beat the squirrels to them every year.

I wonder if he sold the tree. A guy I work with recently sold a standing one for $1000.

nope, all the tree is in firewood sizes, as well as a pine tree farther down the road. looks like he is opening up space. Sad as this tree was next to the irrigation in pipe, so no tractor/field gain was accomplished...

There are thousands of acres of English walnut orchards around this part of the North Sacramento Valley. The trees are grafted--California black walnut root stock, English walnut scion. Crain in Los Molinos CA handles the processing. The walnut shells go to the processors that turn them into grit for grit blasting use. The roadside produce stand along CA 99 feature the local walnuts and almonds.
