Many times I learned the easiest way to get one to work is to take the hose/pipe off and put my finger over the hole and pump.
This will "BURP" it and when you feel just grease coming out put the hose back on and you are good to go.
I work on some machines that have two bearing areas that take 30 pumps EACH! When the gun is working.
I found a air operated Grease Pump on CL that takes a 5 gal pale and rarely have issues with it picking up the grease now.
