Rick,

Just wanted to wish you and the dog the best and please keep us updated. I dearly love dogs and this really makes me sad.

Thanks a bunch for this post Rick. I'm taking my dog to the vet this afternoon. Her shot ran out this month.

This certainly prompted me to check on my dogs rabies status. We adopted him from a shelter, but they didn't provide a tag or registration number for his rabies. Still waiting for a call......

I'm glad you noticed before anything like this happened. I received a call today from the local Animal Control Officer who left a message saying that the State is recommending a minimum 90 quarantine at an approved facility. It tears my heart out to think about my girl locked in a cage with no interaction with anyone for that long. I have to call tomorrow to actually plead my case with the State directly. My dog is licensed and spayed. I just realized today that the vaccinations last for three years, including the one she just got. My vet had to report the incident to the State. Here is a photo of her, it is not that good but I wanted to get my tractor in there as well. Thanks again,
Rick

So your dog DID have a vaccination within legal limits? If that's the case, then I would think that the State wouldn't (couldn't) do anything. Has your vet offered to provide any support? What does (s)he have to say about all of this? I would think that the vet would have SOME experience with situations like this.

This would absolutely kill me if it were happening to my dog. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Good luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No, I was confused about the dates, mostly because my vet confused me. She was two weeks past the three year mark. At the time of the incident the Vet didn't think it was that big of a deal, and informing the State was a mere formality. My Vet should have done a titer test /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. I just spoke to the manufacturer of the vaccine, Merial, and they basically said that the immunity can last for months, even years longer. But they also said that means nothing, local law is law.

Do you have a pen you can keep your dog in? If so I would take pictures of it and presnet them to the State as a place that YOU could keep the dog quarantined in.

Hope it works out for you and if you have to do the quarantine route, hope there is a local facility. We moved to England in 1998 and had to put our two dogs in quarantine for 6 months-- we visited often and they survived, it was great having them with us the other 3 years we lived in the UK.

I was bitten by a tenant's dog a while back and the law specified a 10 day impoundment. Why would they specify a 3 or a 6 month isolation if they could tell if the dog had been exposed in 10 days?

In my opinion, it is a punitive action on the part of the State for not having followed the rules that they have set in place. My guess is that if they can make one person pay to keep a dog in quarantine for 3 months, that person will let everyone that they know what the cost is. This will get more people to pay attention to getting the rabies vaccines current. To me, it is just like when the police officer in Texas arrested a woman because her child wasn't restrained by a seat belt. A ticket would have been sufficient, but he wanted to make an "example" out of her. To me, this type of governmental action is without regard for respect of the citizens of our country. Have you ever noticed that government always exempts itself from its laws????? I will now step down from my soap box..... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
