zzvyb6, when I did a search on Duramax, all I got back was about diesels and some type of male enhancement drug. They did give him tramadol, also known as Ultram, and it seems to help but it makes him real groggy.

Charles, you are right about cortisone injections into a joint. That does work better for an internal joint problem than taking it by mouth. But, since we don't know exactly where the problem is and since it is in the spine there would be no way to know where to put the shot. In humans, you can give cortisone shots into the spine but that is usually done with x-ray guidance once you know exactly where the problem (herniated disk) is. I just figured they'd give him a cortisone shot in the muscle to speed things along a little. A shot in the muscle is pretty much the same as taking it by mouth but might work a little faster.

... I think the challenge now will be to prevent re-injury. In other words, he's feeling better, he's able to move around some and he wants to go go go. .....

This is a problem with labs. I had the same issue with my own labs when they're injured (or the case of my current one, Lyme's). It is just their nature. They want to GO! My lab is on the small side, so people always think she is a pup, and are surprised to find out she is 8 yrs. old. My vet jokes that labs grow out of the "puppy stage" (with regard to playing) when they're between 7 and 10 years old. Mine still plays like a pup, but has less stamina than she used to.

I find the best way to keep her from over doing it is to keep her inside (and away from the neighbor's dog she loves to run with), and to not get her excited.

At least it sounds like your little buddy is going to get through this, and that is great news!

Senator Vest's "Tribute to the Dog"
It is strange how tenaciously popular memory clings to the bits of eloquence men have uttered, long after their deeds and most of their recorded thoughts are forgotten, or but indifferently remembered. However, whenever and as long as the name of the late Senator George Graham Vest of Missouri is mentioned it will always be associated with his love for a dog.

Many years ago, in 1869, Senator Vest represented in a lawsuit, a plaintiff whose dog "Old Drum" had been willfully and wantonly shot by a neighbor. The defendant virtually admitted the shooting, but questioned to the jury the $150 value plaintiff attributed to this mere animal. To give his closing argument, George Vest rose from his chair, scowling, mute, his eyes burning from under the slash of brow tangled as a grape vine. Then he stepped sideways, hooked his thumbs in his vest pockets, his gold watch fob hanging motionless, it was that heavy. He looked, someone remembered afterwards, taller than his actual 5 feet 6 inches, and began in a quiet voice to deliver an extemporaneous oration. It was quite brief, less than 400 words:

"Gentlemen of the jury: the best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his worst enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous... is his dog.

Gentlemen of the Jury: a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

The jury deliberated less than two minutes then erupted in joint pathos and triumph. The record becomes quite sketchy here, but some in attendance say the plaintiff who had been asking $150, was awarded $500 by the jury. Little does that matter. The case was eventually appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court, which refused to hear it.

A statue of "Old Drum" was erected on the Johnson County Courthouse Square in Warrensbug, Missouri, where the trial occurred. The statue still stands there today.

I just had another thought. Since the first symptom(s) started with a front paw, is it possible he was stung by a snake or some other venomous creature? Looks to me like it could be a snake bite reaction. The drug Sam got was Deramaxx 100 mg. My bad on spelling. Don't give him any diesel supplements ! If the vet says to try it. I could send you a few, Sam only needed one to put him back in gear.

Egon, I would never let my dog drink antifreeze. To make sure no animals were harmed I poured it all down my well pipe. I'm very careful about these things.;)

IH344, great post on 'Old Drum'.

zz, Don't think its a snake bite. No swelling anywhere. And truth is, at lunch today he is doing even better than this morning. He jumped right up when I got home. He's still wobbly in the rear but he didn't fall.

I looked up Deramaxx. It is a type of anti-inflammatrory pain reliever called a Cox-2 inhibitor much like Celebrex and Mobic for humans. I sort of expected the vet would give him an anti-inflammatory but she said the prednisone was sufficient for that. However, I may look into getting some down the road since he does have some arthritis and it would be great for that. Thanks for telling me about it, I had never heard of it before.

N80 - our old yellow Lab was on a non steroidal anti inflammatory for arthritis, and joint problems called Metacam for the last four years of his life. Some of my Doc friends tell me that the human version is probably cheaper  It seems to be a very popular anti inflamatory here. Some cautions about liver problems from over use but we did not encounter any. We always feared the day that his joint problems would leave him incapacitated and in pain so everytime he started limping or hobbling we dreaded taking him to the Vet for diagnosis. Always turned out to be something else (impacted infection in a toe for example that I found after x rays:rolleyes:) Irony is we had to put him down at 9 1/2 years from a ruptured diaphram after an auto accident last year. Still miss that dog -- hope yours gets better

Metacam is meloxicam. The brand name for humans is called Mobic. It can be purchased at places like Walmart for $4. However, I don't know what dosage range it comes in in the Metacam form. But, if its 7.5 or 15mg that's what generic meloxicam comes in.

I have no idea what the law says about a medical doctor prescribing a medicine for a patient to give to his dog. Probably not an issue as long as insurance isn't involved.

Dash continues to improve. He was having trouble sitting or lying down without falling over but he is able to do that okay now. Back legs are still very unsteady and uncoordinated but seem to be improving rapidly.

A bottle of Metacam that lasted about a month was over $125:eek: it is in a liquid form , honey flavoured. Dosing is by number of drops.
