(1) The U.S. Census Bureau doesn't consider 2.5 acre lots to be rural. You're in the suburbs there. Rural has a maximum population density or 150 people per square kilometer.

(2) You're not legally liable for the dogs biting your neighbor's wife unless you get a judge or jury that are complete ignoramuses (unfortunately that's all too possible.) The dogs barked, you warned her and against your warning she continued to advance and even stuck her hand out at the dogs. 100% her fault.

(3) Check with your local town for noise ordinances, if any. Most will agree that if you're sitting on your porch, have normal hearing and speak in a normal volume, there should be no reason you can't hear each other over the sound of a motorcycle. If you can't, the bike probably exceeds safe noise levels and you have a valid legal complaint against them. Just tell them about it, and which machine is the culprit. If you have to tell them twice, let them know that if you have to do it a 3rd time, you'll have to let the town in on it. (i.e. notify the police.) Talk with your other neighbors and get a consensus; they're probably bothered by them too.

(4) You're not responsible for their chickens wandering over on your property and being killed. They do have a right to get their chicken carcass back for eating, composting, or other disposal.

(5) Dog chained to a tree for 2+ hours at night barking continuously may be considered to be maltreated by the ASPCA. Cruelty to animals is a legal offense worse than cruelty to your neighbors.

Boy can this be transferred around at times. Just substitute the word dogs for humans and you've hit the nail more often than not. end quote. arrow

That's actually a very big gripe of mine.
Why in gods name does everyone seem to think either me or my dog wants them laying their hands all over them? Why is it seemingly that all of humanity thinks my dog should like and seek attention from every Tom Dick and Jane that happen across it's path?
And at times to the point of me having to psychically move between some idiot stranger and my dog.

Because to us humans, dogs equate to affection. To get it, humans give it. I would ponder it's been long enough in the dog's domestication time length that affection and dogs are synonymous to us and many of our species attempt to acquire affection with any chance they get even if it means assumption.

Or, the neighbor lady could have thought, not unreasonably, that the best way to deal with this dog she is living next to is to befriend it. From her perspective, that can make a lot of sense.

I don't count myself as an expert, but my guess is that the great majority of fearful dogs can be taught to trust individual people. Fear in dogs is related to a lack of self confidence, and/or an alpha member they can draw confidence from. Even dogs that have been abused can easily learn to like people. It happens often with rescues and shelter animals.

In dogs, being territorial and having an unstable, fearful personality are two very different things. A stable personality dog has a neutral reaction to strangers acting normally, to other dogs, and to strange objects. They don't shy away hiding behind their owner, they don't threaten with barks and nips, and they don't jump up and lick faces like they found a new best friend either.

Measured decible level at measured distance. ANYTHING else is only a matter of opinion.

That said, big assumption in that the neighbor has around 2 or 3 acres, it is just plain rude to ride a motor bike wide open next to your neighbor. It's also kind of rude to have your dogs kill a neighbors chicken and you dump the chicken back onto the neighbors property without saying anything. I don't see this playing out very well.

There is a choice, peace in the heart or conflict in the head.
I would improve the fence and ask for them to enjoy the bikes in small doses maybe arrange suitable times and periods. If possible quiet them down a bit. In my experience people come from the city's and lose track of simple curtaseys like staying off other peoples properties or how sound carries. Something that we are always having issues with on our 50 acres. The dogs, well it's upto you to ensure that they are trained sufficiently to obey command and under control at all times. Tough when you love an animal but I had an issue with my dog killing live stock and had no other responsible action but to deal with it.
Unfortunately whether you like it or not you are going to have to live with these people and the good and the bad. Like I said peace in the heart over conflict in the head. Good Luck

I feel the same way. I take my dog dang near everywhere and why people reach down and pet her, I have no idea. She doesn't know or trust them. She doesn't bite, but she meets their hand with an open mouth and they get the idea quick.

In college we were in the process of buying a horse for the cost of the unpaid board on the part of the previous owner. The horse was stabled in an old barn along with some other livestock. We had to pass a growling barking german shephard on a chain every time we went to see the horse. The second time, I watched the dog closely and approached him slowly hand out talking quietly. He kept barking until I was a few feet away, then the head went down and the tail started moving. And didn't he love the attention and patting. It was like that every time after too, but without growling. He just wanted some company. Other times when I used to bike a lot, dogs would chase me - biting my feet as I pedaled past the house. Once or twice I had to get off and keep the bike between myself and the dog. You knew the houses, same thing every time. Some dogs respond to "Git" and a raised hand, "Go home" not all do. On horse back it is even messier. Then you walk at the troublesome dog and they usually back off.
I used to help a horse trainer train attack dogs to sell. It is very systematic, a reward/control based system. Whenever he got a dog that he didn't feel right about, he shot it. He was good to his dogs, but like every other animal he worked with, they minded.

Have you ever observed how quickly things like this can occur before anyone can react....the neighbor should have heeded the man's warning...the dog is protective and we weren't there to see if the neighbor approached in a rapid manner which the dog perceived as threatening....Not enough information....anyway....I do not have a Dog, Chicken or anything else in this fight...just compassion....so don't get mad at me...and don't go kick a Dog...:)

on the other hand, we can tell the owner kinda knew the dog had an issue as he pretty much said so.

If I had a dog that i knew was super teritorial, and my NEIGHBOR walked over. i'd do the right thing.. the responsible thing as the onwer, and order my dog back or grab it's collar if the dog was not on voice command status..
