My dogs killed neighbors chicken

The dog should have been kept away from anyone approaching the front door. On the other hand, people should not reach at dogs that don't know them. The chickens should not be free ranged in a close neighborhood or where predators are around, that is just common sense.

I have enjoyed this thread so much I must comment. First off the op should have given the chicken to the neighbor’s dog that would take care of the chicken and the barking dog. Second the lady came inside the dog’s fence, wireless or not that was the dog’s territory.

If I had a dog that i knew was super teritorial, and my NEIGHBOR walked over. i'd do the right thing.. the responsible thing as the onwer, and order my dog back or grab it's collar if the dog was not on voice command status..

+1

When someone comes over to my place I ask them if they are afraid of being licked to death, and if they say no, I release the hounds LOL

Oooh,
Careful Rock or koua will put you on his ignore list.

I feel the same way. I take my dog dang near everywhere and why people reach down and pet her, I have no idea. She doesn't know or trust them. She doesn't bite, but she meets their hand with an open mouth and they get the idea quick.

We can't help ourselves. Most people have a natural affinity for dogs, just like they enjoy sitting by a campfire, and are attracted to flowing water. Dogs are likely the first domesticated animal.

There is a reason umpteen million fireplaces have been built, and that dogs are ubiquitous as pets, and that waterfront property never goes out of style. Not to mention the billions of $$$ spent on these things. Call it genetic memory or what ever, it's hard-wired into us.

When you approach a strange dog who is with their master, you ALWAYS ask the master first if the dog can be petted. My boys know that by breaking this rule can result in a FUYB (pronouned "foyb" LOL).

No argument there. I was speaking to the motivations, the 'why'.

Shrug, that I can understand Dave,
What I can't understand is why everyone thinks all dogs are the same. Even dogs from the same litter will differ in how their individual characters are expressed. Heck I've met ugly Goldens, Spaniels that won't hunt, Labs that hated the water and Poodles dumber than a box of rocks. Everybody just assumes too much enre to dogs.
Everybody like children too, but when meeting them they don't go around slapping and patting them all around their head, randomly giving them treats, getting down and going all goo goo directly in their face or try to correct or train some imagined oversight of the care taker.

The closest I ever came to losing the farm was because of those kinds of assumptions made by someone.
My last GSD absolutely adored people, she had to meet any and everyone. What that trait masked was she KNEW from the day she was born she was the equal to any man. She took no crap and gave no quarter. She was a very serious dog.
Still young (perhaps 1 1/2) I had her in the shop with me. Customer and friend come to pick up his car. While we went over work done and work to be done his friend and dog are visiting. Shrug, no biggie right? She likes people and her manners are coming along nicely, she no longer jumps on people to smell their breath (don't ask, I don't know) but on occasion would bounce straight in the air to accomplish that.
I hear a yip behind me. I looked to the dog first (luckly) and caught her in midair on the way to tearing that guy a new a**hole.
Well ?!!!! Oh he says, I just put a knee in her chest to break her of jumping up like that, I didn't hurt her.

I don't know where the guy and his friend get their Fiat fixed now. I was livid.

When we use to work pet adoptions at pet smart with the human society, I was amazed at all the people who would let their children come running up to pet the animals without asking first. Then, when you try to explain to the parents that their child should always ask the owner of the dog first if they can pet the dog (and that they should approach the animal slowly) sometimes they would get mad at me like I was reprimanding them. Yes, sometimes dogs do attack children unprovoked, but when you have a small child sometimes at "dog height" running up to a strange dog, you're only asking for problems.

On public property it's easier to defend your dogs actions due to ignorance of others as compared to when it's on your own property.
