Or how about quackgrass as a fuel. Turn your "problem" into a cash crop! :D

Can grasses replace corn as ethanol crop of choice? | SmartPlanet

If I want hay, er, straw, er, quackgrass mulch, I can go across the road and get all I want, the owner of the property across the road was there yesterday with a bush hog on a tractor, mowing down all the four foot high stuff that has been growing all season. He didn't have to, because a rural lot with no buildings is exempt from the weed ordinances here, so I went over and thanked him.

I've got a partial roll of hay from when the neighbor who cuts my hay had a problem with his baler. I've thought of using that in my garden, but my hay got cut last year long after the fescue (and weeds) had gone to seed, so we're talking high seed concentrations in that stuff. I also have access to unlimited horse manure, both fresh and aged but not composted. I should just mix that seedy hay and some fresh manure and let it compost, after which it will be a great addition to my garden. However, if I were to mulch with that hay as it is I'd have really nice rich high quality fescue in my planting beds. Fescue is edible, but not one of my personal favorites.

Chuck

When is fescue hay ever cut so that it dosent have a seed head on it. That stuff will go to seed in like 3 weeks! The hay i had had fescue seed in it. NOt 100% fescue but a lot.

Hay and straw are 2 different things folks hay still has the seeds its used for animal feed and straw is the stalk less the crop just to clear that up for the city folks.

Why would anyone want to "plant" alfalfa or wheat or prairie grass in their garden when its weeds they are trying to snuff out? :confused2:

(straw is what you spread in a garden)

You are correct on the terminoligy, and so was i when i said i put hay in my garden. I do not have a weed problem either during or after the season.

We also rode our bicycle out to Subway, just for fun. Yeah, i could have jumped in the car and powered my way there, but we ride a tandem and did something different than 99% of the rest.

A trail diverged in the woods and i took the one less traveled. To this day it Still makes the difference. :)

Im Glad yall are having this experience togeather and enjoying the exercise. If my wife and i were to do this we would have to ride 7 miles to the subway. It would take us a few hours to get there and back! If i were to ride my bike from my farm to a subway if would take me half a day i think to ride that distance of 15 miles or so to the subway!

If it bugs you that much why not ask him if you can help him cut it a few times a year. He may want to run his tractor too, but if he say comes one time and you do it the next he wont have to come as often and it will be less weed seedy for you as well.

Well it's not for everyone.

i used to ride very little, but i found it was a more pleasurable way to get exercise and spend time with the family. Most bicycles travel an average of 75 miles in America during their whole life, basically these bikes are wall hangers.

But others see it as a sport etc. Once upon a time i rode very little, a few times a year, but sensing i needed more exercise we started to ride. Just a few miles at first, but did it frequently.

We built up last summer to 10 to 20 miles a day. Not a lot by enthusiasts standards but it makes a difference in fitness. We also started running, which is even more vigorous.

Part of the problem is getting good equipment, a good Road Bike properly fitted makes the ride fun. Seat height is major, many don't have their seat high enough, so the full power of their legs are under utilized. Your legs should be almost entirely suspended on the down stroke. Get a bike shop to fit you.

Is it worth it?

Last summer when exiting a local restaurant, i met some older men at a picnic table eating, but with very fine Road Bicycles near by. Struck up a conversation with one of them and found him to be 75 years old. Wow i am thinking he doesn't look it at all and quite strong, no fat.

So i asked him how far he rides and it was more than what i would do. He said he rides Centuries, which are 100 miles in a day and does a few of them a year.

My eyes were bugging out.

He had been riding his high end Bianchi Road Bicycle for about 40 years and thought he may just continue his pace until age 80 or so. Sure his bicycle cost more than the junk at the Big Box store, but what is your health and life worth?

My response was to look for good use Road Bicycles and repair them. Bought a good Bicycle repair manual and learned by doing. Bicycles need to be overhauled and adjusted front to back when used. Make sure all bearing are repacked with grease and the brakes/shifting adjusted.

Most anyone can do it.

BTW, our Subway is about a 10 mile round trip, wish it was further.

So you are biciylists not just have a bike type people. That makes more sense. I am not really a lazy person as it goes. I run 3 times a week 2miles twice and 1 mile once. Not far and really am not loosing weight. I need to go longer but i just dont seem to be getting anywhere?

I just personally would not just jump on the bike and ride to subway but like i said its a 14 mile roundtrip.

i think we are on the same page.

Running 2 miles does the same trick; and i feel running is superior to bicycling, you get more exercise quicker that way.

Biking 14 miles would need some practice build up rides. Most likely your bicycle is not a good one for long distance if your average. And secondly the bike probably doesn't fit right or perhaps it is set up incorrectly for the all important seat height.

Running is better for many as there is no equipment involved. A decent pair of running shoes and your done. Swimming about the same thing.

>>>I am not really a lazy person as it goes.

Preferring one sport over another has nothing to do with lazyness. In fact it is the preferred way of doing anything. If you don't like your sport you aint gonna do it.

Running is great as it works in about any kind of weather. i don't like taking the bike out in windy, rainy, snowy, and the list goes on. :)
