Getting a patent may not be as expensive as you think and you would qualify if you disclosed the idea to the public less than a year ago.
You likely qualify for "small entity status", which entails a nominal fee of about $350. Getting an attorney is not necessary, you can use an agent or write it yourself. I have shown many how to do it and have 30 US patents myself.
