If someone called 911 why would they send police to check out a reported structure fire & then they call the fire dept.? Something wrong with this picture.

Especially with volunteer departments, law enforcement can usually get there quicker!

I have not read though all the responses but the blame usually lies with a scared petty burocrat with only half a clue covering their backside by enforcing excessive compliance.

Local police are always on patrol and they thought it was a good idea to have a unit check out the situation ASAP and if needed report back to local FD...no more than 4-5 minutes elapsed between the time the police got here to the time the FD did and since local FD is mostly volunteers it took a while for them to suit up and get rolling. I felt bad they were called out because there was no reason for it...the FD wanted me to give them a heads up the day before I began burning AND I DID THAT TWO DAYS IN A ROW and my repeated requests for a text number were not answered.

....and someone calls 911.....

Yeah, been there. Good thing you played by the rules JD, no matter how screwy they are or may be.....

Good for you. Glad it is done, eh?

Yeah out here in the sticks county mounties will always beat the fire departments or ambulances to any kind of 911 call. The deputies and if a state trooper is close are the only first responders who are "at the ready" when any kind of 911 call comes.

Good job Bill.

Same here for local/state LEOs, they will almost always be there first on a 911 call that isn't strictly EMT stuff.

It sounds like the LEO responded to a 911 call as usual, then followed a procedure that calls for checking for a burn permit. FD screwed up not knowing about the permit, so they roll too by their procedure.

I was one that found some fault in your earlier posts, and just wanted you to know that I am glad it all turned out OK for your burn. Judging by your update, your initial response seems more in line with what you experienced overall.

Congrats on the burn JD, I can't believe that you had to go through so many steps just to make a burn happen. When I worked full time on a rural FD in Michigan and there was snow on the ground all it took was just a phone call to notify and you were good to go. Your township definitely has a very thorough process in order to burn brush.

I know it is an inconvenience to you but if I were you I would attend the next township board meeting. Tell them you are thankful for their response and concern for your burning but the process is so terribly slow and inefficient to get authorization that by the time you get approval you could miss an ideal time to burn. You should not have to keep a phone log in order to prove you did everything on your part IMO.

JD may not know how to deal with people in authority, but he sure knows how to start a lively thread.

RIGHT!!!! And unlike a vast majority of people in the modern world, I DETEST staring at a screen for more than a few minutes at a time. Which explains my disappearance here...

It is very common to have LEO there.
Sometimes they are first on scene; They will reports conditions, try to find out if people in the building, traffic control(on a fire we may have to shut road down for safety, hose lines across road etc).
Sometimes fire responds to fire that is crime scene
Crowd control
Just to name a few...

If someone called 911 why would they send police to check out a reported structure fire & then they call the fire dept.? Something wrong with this picture.
