My new 4550 temperature gauge not working

The only Mahindras with the EGR vent hose are 3540, 3550, 4540, 4550. The vent hose prevents air bubbles from causing hot spots in the cooler which can cause cooler failure(like the Navistar 6.0 Powerjoke EGR Cooler), installing a restrictor in this line allows the engine to get up to temp. All of the temperature gauges work but Mahindra runs all their engines at 165 F with direct driven fans(No Clutch) which will keep things on the cool side. When it's below freezing the air moved by the engine fan can take heat away from the block(Block acts like a massive heat sync) this is why putting cardboard infront of the radiator is effective in below freezing conditions. These engines were designed to run in 100+F all day so their cooling systems are a little overkill in the US's temperate climate. Even in warm weather they won't heat up too far unless they're really worked.

I think this is the best "first post" I have ever read. Welcome to the forums! Good information.

165 degrees F seems a bit low. It seems like most Diesels run at a higher temperature for efficiency reasons. I understand also that an engine that is operated at a higher temperature has less wear as well.

Can any one post a picture or two of the EGR and the hose that is causing the problem?

Don't know why you think a higher temperature would reduce wear? As long as the oil is hot enough to evaporate any moisture it's plenty warm enough. I'm pretty sure the lower temp is a NOX control strategy to help reduce the amount of EGR needed which would reduce the amount of particulate matter allowing Mahindra to avoid using a DPF.

I put some cardboard in front of the radiator on my 45-40. I ran it for about 15 minutes under a light load. The temperature gage came up to about mid-scale. I checked the temperature with a non-contact thermometer at multiple points around the engine. The highest reading I got was around the exhaust manifold of around 230 degrees. Around the water pump and hoses was about 130.

I can tell you, it got warm for the first time like an engine should.

My only question is, am I going to have to run cardboard in front of the radiator from now on?

If it hasn't been addressed the tractor needs to have the ECU flashed.. this will fix the temp problem along with increased hp... it will also give you a 30ish second glow time before and after crank

This is additional information to an earlier post I made to
this thread to provide an update in case anyone following the the issue is interested.

When I received my tractor I noticed the glow plug indicator was not lighting up when I turned the key To “ON”. The manual said it should light up for about 40 seconds. The dealer initially thought it was because ambient temperature of the tractor was high enough that the glow plug indicator would not illuminate. When the ambient temps got into the high 50s low 60s it still would not light up. I called the dealer and they came out and did a ECU reflash. The glow plug indicator did light up when I turned the tractor on and came back on for a short time after the tractor started. It has done so ever since the reflash.

The temperature gauge did not seem to move off the bottom peg both before the reflash and still did not move after the reflash. I had a second issue (with the instrument panel) that was under warranty and so the dealer took the tractor in to address both. When I got the tractor back it was winter here with temps in the low 20s. The temp gauge did not move when I used the tractor and I called the dealer. I asked about a reflash and they said it was not the ECU but was the bypass (mentioned in an earlier post) and they fixed the problem verifying the temperature gauge moved before they returned the tractor to me. It was at that time the dealer mechanics suggested I use cardboard in front of the radiator. I did use cardboard and the temperature gauge moved to almost mid point when the temps were in the low 20s.

Now that spring is here I took the cardboard out from in front of the radiator and ran the tractor today. Temps in the low 70s. I bush hogged (5 ft bush hog) the winter rye on my ¾ acre garden and I noticed the temp gauge moved to just below midpoint on the green band. When I idled the tractor while I swapped out the bush hog for a disk I noticed the temp gauge dropped to the bottom peg. While I was disking the garden I noticed the temp gauge again went to just below midpoint on the temp gauge.

So for my 4550 unit it seems the bypass flow restriction the dealer did solved the temperature gauge not moving problem in warm weather. Also, it looks like I will need to block air flow through the radiator when temps drop into the 40s and below if I want the temp gauge to move when it is cold outside. The next test will be to see what the temp gauge does when it gets really hot (read 90s for us). I will have to wait until August to check that out.

Hope this helps.

lol it will do fine... that's a nice cool summer day down here and the 4500seires is one of our main tractors sold each year... they take the heat well even working in 108-110
