Smoke in the intake could also be the ThermoStart (manifold heater) working normally while the key is turned. There is a description on Hoyetractor's website.

I don't suppose that would be to big of a job and would define whether it is a valve problem. What bothers me is the report from the former owner of possible water coming out exhaust. Still think it would be worth your while to roll the engine over with compression release left alone and observe radiator for bubbles.

When cranking it I am getting some venting from the block. Not much. Which may be normal, I'm not sure

After watching California's video of his 240 starting. I realized I dont think I had near his compression. But any way I new I had a bad head gasket at least. So I went ahead and pulled the head off. Head gasket looked ok, but I did find crack in the head between the exhaust and intake valves. It explains why some pressure was coming out the intake.
Any thoughts on possible repair of this or replace head? Hopefully you can see picture. Hoyes has new bare head for about 600 or loaded head with new valves and springs 733. Most of my equipment looks in good shape. Should I go with loaded or bare

I would take it to a local machine shop. Can't be certain just by the crack showing in the Pic. if thats all of it. Should be repairable and they can go through the valves while there at it.

It appears that crack extends through both valve seats and beyond the exhaust valve, probably not worth trying to repair. I believe I would try to return the tractor or sell for parts, and get a running tractor. You are going to have about $1000, plus whatever you paid for it in a still non-running tractor, of unknown condition.

If the tractor as a whole is in good condition I would replace the head with the "complete" assembly. If it has been run for very long with the crack there's a good chance the valves may have started to burn at the crack. It would be a good idea to pull the oil pan before you buy the head and look at the rods to make sure one is not slightly bent. I doubt that has happened but check it to be sure. The crack could have been caused from overheating or a fluid lock. Diesels are pretty tough engines and you may just need a head.

If going as far as pulling pan I would re ring. You really have an unknown here. Spending $500 or whatever is a lot not to go ahead spend a little more for rings. If you put a new head and end up with blow by you are going to be awfully disappointed.
