If going as far as pulling pan I would re ring. You really have an unknown here. Spending $500 or whatever is a lot not to go ahead spend a little more for rings. If you put a new head and end up with blow by you are going to be awfully disappointed.

I agree. Usually the rule is if you do head work the rings should be replaced at the same time unless it's just a blown head gasket. Depends I guess if he has the know how and the tools to do the work. For me, now would be the time to go through the whole engine and replace what is needed so you won't have to do it again for a very long time. Peace of mind if nothing else:thumbsup:

Ok purchased new head and took your advise replaced rings. Parts came in finally. So I am in the process of reassembling now.

Had to pull pan back off so got pictures of oil pick up tube for California. Its amazing how clean inside the block is for 30 yr old tractor, that I'm not sure how well maintained it was.

Cylinder walls looked good did a light hone on them. Should have head on back on and back together this weekend.

I'm amazed how clean that is.

The manual says to drop the pan and clean that tube periodically, but with today's oils it doesn't seem necessary.

Bowinelk, there is a post right before this one about oil level and easier cold weather cranking. If you haven't already put your pan back on I wonder if you would look at the oil level on the dipstick in relationship to the throw on the crankshaft when in the down position. I have always believed on most pressurized systems the crankshaft does not dip in the oil. I really can't tell from your pictures. Thanks.

Ok. I measured from the bottem of the crankcase to the full oil level on the dipstick it measured 3.25 inches. So the oil level is about 3.25 inches. The lowest point that the crank shaft reaches is about 3.75 inches. So your right the crank does not dip into the oil.
