Good deal. I would've been afraid to try that for fear of cracking the new wall.

I was actually waiting for something bad to happen.

but I literally BARELY touched the bar and the steps moved.

whew!!

The outside of the wall has mortar or cement spread all over the face and then painted.

I was worried the paint would show a mark or the cement would crack and fall off....but nothing..

yet

Glad every thing worked out!!

If the soil is fresh it might sink some more I'd let it ride a while till it see if it settles more ie fix it once not 3X just my opinion

BTW the pry bar is a spike puller for railroad spikes

yooper1,
Sounds like the pry bar was the perfect tool. Great idea. Thanks for the pictures.

I am glad it was easy.

I had my tow straps out and ready

I had a come-a-long ready

I had some lengths of chain ready

but thought I would try the bar first and it worked

yay!!!

Thanks again to all who offered insight

You may have to do it all over in the late spring the frost is going to move it again. Dont ask how I know.

I would show your contractor that the steps are not level and offer to allow him to come back after a mutually agreed upon time to correct the issue if they have not settled to your satisfaction. You may want to hold back a percentage of his fee and get it in writing.

Oh ya...I will be pointing that out to them. Along with me having to move the steps that they would not.

They will need to either come back at a later time or attempt to level now.

And I will try and get it in writing and get the fee thing agreed to.

As of now, he has not done what was listed in the bid / quote, so he will not get 100% paid today

It is my understanding that the dirt under the steps was excavated for 8 or 10 feet below the steps all the way down to the basement footer in order to fix the basement wall. It's about guaranteed there will be some settling under the steps. I think it's reasonable to have the contractor install the steps initially so that water drains away from the house. After that, yooper1, I would imagine that you're on your own to fix tweak for future settling.
