so you want to use the seed hopper to fertilize instead of the fertilizer hopper?

Yes that is what I have been reading on here ? Seems like it would be a even distribution ?

I have a question about using the earthway with a plate for side dressing . i have the attachment for fertalizer but it is gravity fed so keeping a consistant speed is very important and if you get hung up on something it leaves a pile so i am very interested in the method and plate you use and do you go down both sides of the row? how far out ? Maybe i wont have to do a bunch of testing do you know how much it applys on a 100 ft row with the pea plate ??? Thanks for any help

I am using a plate with small holes cant tell you which at this moment but think its Okra? Anyway I use 46-0-0 in my seeder as is (no fertilizer attachment) and I run it right down the middle of my furrow while the corn is 1'-2' tall otherwise side dress 4-5" off to the side outside down the rows. My guess is that puts out 1-1.5 lb per 75' based on my hand broadcasting method I usually do with the nitrogen? hth

My review of Northern Super Sweet Gurneys variety is just so-so wasn't anywhere near as sweet as Gotta Have It. It was more like Kandy Korn imo an SE variety not SH. I put it in March 25 and had a good crop and they germinated fine in colder soil which was my plan because I am planning 2 crops again this year.

Fact I have the second crop in which is Gotta Have It up about a foot now and looking forward to that harvest this fall.

I am using the bean plate for applying fertilizer. Not sure how much the hopper holds but filling it almost to the top (if you go past the hole where it drops seeds the fertilizer will pour out) it lasts about 200'. The way it works out with my tractor (b7100) I furrow right behind my tires and it makes small bed or hill in between. I plant two rows of corn in this bed. When I plant I put down 46-0-0 down the center of each bed (between the two rows of corn). I then re-apply when the corn is 8" and 18" (about the last time you can get the planter down the center of the beds). I water each application in with sprinklers and then switch to flood for the rest of the summer (plants get too tall to use sprinklers anyway).

I got those fertilizer application times from a post here on TBN from someone who used to farm corn. Their mention of applying dry fertilizer 'two inches over and two inches down' at planting is what gave me the idea of using my planter. Haven't been particularly scientific about how much is getting applied but I don't believe I am under applying as I always have a good crop. Side dressing seems to feed the weeds as much as anything and using the planter is certainly a more controlled process than throwing down fertilizer by hand. I like the 'targeted application' of using the planter.
