Oops, forgot to explain the picks. The black trailer is usually my Kubota's home, but right now it is my workshop.

Nice fairly well equipped mobile workshop you built yourself. Your generator stand looks convenient for access from inside, but yet, the work surface looks a tad high. Or is it?

The overall dimensions aren't too far off from the AT Oasis (just a bit shorter). The one consideration is that the axle placement on mine is pretty much dictated by the formed fenderwells in the '05 Tacoma bed.

I have built a few trailers in my time.

The latest one is a log hauling trailer.
I used the coil suspension from an old caravan, to save reinventing the wheel, and from that I added a box section spine and an angle iron frame. The frame was made to hold two 4'x3' folding pallet crates while the spine became a telescopic drawbar.

The two scaffold pole legs at the back can be changed for longer poles with a cross bar that I use with a chain or cable hoist to lift logs into the trailer. There is also a roller across the back so that the logs can roll on as they are loaded.

I also have a winch on the back of my car that I can use through the trailer to pull a load up.

The folding box sides means I can have one big box, two segregated boxes, one box and a flat bed or a large flat bed. The crates are also removable to leave a skeletal frame.

The draw bar extends giving me 8' to 15' of trailer.

The cross beam at the hitch will eventually have a pair of pull out extensions with jack up legs and then a crane will be added. I bought this electro-hydraulic crane a while ago just for this purpose.

I might be able to dig out some build photos if you want.

Double axle trailers are tough to manhandle, a trailer with a single 3500 lb axle with a boggie wheel on the tongue jack is easy to move around in the driveway. My driveway is newer paved. I have to watch my double axle, that I don't make any turns when putting it into its parking position or the sideways torque that remains on the tires will move and dent the pavement.

One way around the side loading when movong a twin axle trailer is to wind the jocky wheel as high as it will go to lift the front axle off the ground. It then becomes a single axle trailer and can be moved around quite easily.

No good if you have a walking beam axle though.;)

Thanks. The top of gen stand is only to protect it from the elements. The height is so I can roll the generator in and roll the stand over it.

Woodsmith,

Very nice trailer. Very similar to what I'm building. What size is your tongue and what is your capacity?

A lot of licencing in many states has breaks at 3000 and 6000 lbs. As do many vehicles.

Building it in between those 2 makes you pay the bigger licence fee, but get the lesser gross weight.

A dump trailer takes more frame & the hydraulic setup, so will have less net weight available.

2.75 yards of sand will weigh around 6300 lbs.

Just some random thoughts, sounds like a neat project & hope you keep us updated.

I lust for a flat deck trailer, I understand about not wanting to get too high....

I think WI has a 5k title that isn't to bad.

I'm looking to haul only those in between sized loads. You know, too much buy in bags, but not enough call in dump truck. I only expect carry about a yard of dirt or sand, maybe a bit more rock. Things like mulch and brush are much lighter per volume. Thus a higher wall.

The extending drawbar is made from 70mm x 5mm square tube inside a 80mm x 4mm square tube.
Closed up the trailer has a maximum of 1300kg all up weight, limited by the original caravan weight for the suspension and brakes and the maximum weight my car is allowed to pull. It weighs 380kg empty.

I'm not sure what I can put on it extended yet until I finish the cross beam behind the hitch. It will need a ladder rack and some mesh to stop loads sliding forwards. It is unlikely that I would have more then 5-600kg on it extended (limited to 100kg nose weight on the hitch) but I have had over 1200kg of rubble in it a couple of times as a box, but don't tell the traffic cops!;)

You're my new hero. If you can build out of your box trailer, I can stop complaining about my two car garage that I have taken over as my shop.

Here's the update.

I got the 2x4x11ga. main frame welded up. Used my new plasma to cut the notches for the receiver tube and the helper/holder tube. Got it all laid out and mostly welded up. Everything was dead on square. Then I added small gussets to the back corners. And now I'm a 1/16th out! Can live being out only 1/16th, but I was so excited to be dead on to begin with such little effort.

The last picture is laying out the sub-frame and the axles. Only having one wheel was tough. The subframe (4"x5.4lb/ft channel) got a 45 cut on the front end. The back was cut 14" in on the bottom to the top back corner. A replacement flange was welded on the cut edge. No pics yet of the finished subframe rails.

Lost my last couple of work days. After well over a year of patiently searching for my new/used 3/4t Suburban. I finally found what I was looking for and it was close enough to my current location. I'm now the happy owner of a 2005 3/4t suburban with the 8.1L engine and 3.73 final drive. This thing has my required specs and everything on my wish list! Now the final challenge is getting back to Ohio and get my new 'burban, old Tahoe, and trailer back to WI.

I won't have any new updates for a while. I'm now in Atlanta and I had fly down so I had to leave toys in Ohio for a few weeks.

Brian
