My tractor won't start and I could really use some help asap

Over the last week or two sometimes when I turn the key my DK45SE makes a very slight click but doesn't engage the starter. It's the same symptom I'd have if I tried to start it with the PTO on or the tractor not in neutral. Normally I fiddle with the shifters and try a few more times until it fires up. I can't tell you if it was the extra turns of the key or the fiddling with the shifters but it would eventually start after a few tries.

Today it won't start at all.

I made a short video that shows the problem:

It's under warranty but if it's a simple fix I'd love to just handle it. The darn thing just happens to have a 1,000 lbs counter weight on the back so I'd like to avoid trying to get it to the dealer somehow.

It sounds like one of the safety switches has been acting up and finally bit the dust. Make sure the tractor is in neutral then try jumping across the starter with a screw driver and see if it starts. Warning this is not a osha recommend practice, and all the liability is on you if you try it.

Well, I fixed it. It was the relay that I put my finger on in the video.

I've actually spent a fair amount of time turning wrenches on cars but something about it being a tractor and being a diesel made me doubt my normal trouble shooting process. Anyway, after this thread I got back out there and thought, "Well, power gets to the relay so this might be a good place to start."

$10 at autozone and the problem is solved.

So - I didn't think in this day and time you could start a tractor , lawn mower , car, with out setting in the seat and your foot on the clutch . In the vid. your helper is not setting in the seat . Are you shure that's not the case ?

On the DK series. As long as the range shifter is in neutral she will start. No seat switch, and there is no clutch on the tractor.

There might be a seat switch related to the PTO, I'm not sure. I'll have to try standing up the next time I'm mowing. However, I can easily start it when it's in neutral and the PTO isn't on. I do it a fair amount to move the hydraulics.

There is no seat switch in your DK as James KOua said.

There is no seat safety at all on the DK, The PTO will keep running if you get off while it is running.

Not having a seat switch is mighty handy when you need to stand up a bit to get your fork tips going straight into a pallet.

Glad you got it fixed.....but I have to tell you, that watching your video made me kringe.....I had a friend die a couple of years ago, doing exactly what you were doing. He was in his seventies, had owned and maintained tractors all of his life, died while trying to start one, as you, standing beside it. The engine fired up, the tranny wasn't in nuetral as he thought, it knocked him down, and ran over his chest. It took his son a minute or so, to get to him, just in time to hear him mumble, "is the tractor ok?" You can't be too careful around tractors, and all of the their attachments.

Sorry if I come off as a preacher....I don't mean to. But every time I climb into the cab of my CK, I think about him, and what a shame it is that he's gone.

With an HST tractor you can get some bad habits, but it shouldn't run you over. Its in both neutrals when you start it with the range selector in N and the pedals centered in "N". My favorite is hooking up something on the 3pt and pressing the hst pedals by hand to line things up, it easily overpowers the brakes in low range.
