That's a pretty typical ice dam and not a bad one. Forget your saw it for several years. That's how long before you see it again on your building IMO. Now if you were heated, in your locale, I'd guess you'd see it again in a year or three. I read the posts rather quick but I'm not seeing you mention it appearing inside the building, so no major problem I presume. I've had it just like that in Maryland and no inside problems. Your interpretation of how it got there is correct. Capillary action of the water primarily. No big deal.

Your are correct chris. Also no water inside building. The roof has about 2" of snow from gutter to ridge vent and there is no leak in sight. I'm 100% sure the ice storm was the cause of the leak. Ice sure can cause havoc when it wants too.

When was your barn built? Did they use a water and ice shield under the first 3' of shingles? Last question, did they use the narrow or wide drip edge. The narrow has about 5/8"- 3/4" hanging down to cover the metal facia, wide varies from 5/4"- 6/4" and does a much nicer job.

No ice shield installed. As far as the drip edge it is just a standard drop. With my situation it never got under the shingle. Instead it got behind my drip edge and leaked down between my fascia trim and fascia board and then into my soffit. This was a strange situation caused by the ice storm we had. Like I said before ice from an ice storm will do some strange things. The ice coats everything.
