Here's a picture of a leaf from a tree (or cluster of trees) in my private 'forest'. I am pretty sure it is an oak (but I'm no expert).

What kind of oak is it? Or is it something else?

There's an app or two that makes a stab at identifying a plant from your photograph of it's leaf. When I've done this, especially with oaks, the results were confusing, making me believe my oak was a hybrid.

We planted an oak - about 18 years ago. It was a Crimson King. It lasted about 12 years and then - died all of a sudden. I don't think it liked our soil here - so much. The leaves that formed on our oak were not the "typical" ones shown for a Crimson King. I'm guessing but - I'll bet our soil type and weather caused that oak to morph somewhat. It still stands out there in the yard. A 25 foot tall skeleton. The birds still seem to like it.

...and where in the world this is.

I was more inclined towards tulip tree, but that's not it. Must be some oak after all, but again, some geographic info always helps. Oaks are "promiscuous", related species can hybridize, so that can add uncertainty.

It is on our place in NE Texas. In the Pineywoods.

I don't have a picture of the bark. I'll be back out there on Sunday, I think.
