Well, daggone it, I guess I'll have to admit that did have to take the driver exam a second time in 1985 because I moved, forgot to update the address with the DMV and wound up driving on expired license. Second driver exam was in the 1984 Honda Civic.

My guess is state financial responsibility laws have eliminated early drivers licenses due to insurance?

Growing up we didn’t have medical insurance and proof of insurance not required to renew registration.

Dad did have mortgage insurance as lender requirement but many dropped when paid off the mortgage.

I still know people that drive without insurance and they also don’t register their cars… they do have no cost to them health insurance through the county.

The car dealer I worked for had to have a copy of my report card and drivers license and did check license status for violations… so even then a minor driving or getting tickets was a thing.

Looks like the airport elevation is 750 ft, so on a 32 degree day with 10kt wind from the south the ground roll is only 650 ft and there don't appear to be any obstacles, so what the heck, go for it! Just to be on the safe side, I'd probably start at the north end of the big hangar. Have to have a lookout to make sure someone doesn't taxi or drive across between the buildings.

Looks like a heck of a lot of back-taxiing if you want to use 4 or 33.
Yeah, they tried it from the north fence first. Worked their way south to the pumps, then a bit past the pumps. Light fuel load, I'm sure, and as I recall, these two guys probably weighed a buck twenty five each. Wind is almost always out of the SSW there.

Interesting story to me at least.... first day I ever worked at an airport was that airport, summer of 1979, at an airshow, and the first plane I ever put fuel in was a T-6 Texan. :)

My Grandfather had a Taylorcraft then later a Cessna which I rode in as a little kid. It would shut off at high elevation and he would say the carburetor is frozen...but it will thaw out on the way down. ‍
Then sometimes he would say he felt faint and I'd have to take over! Then he would collapse.
Fun times.

You fellers are older than dirt.

I took my road test in ~1986 in a 1984 Renault Encore 4spd manual, no power anything.
All of us, however, are younger than sand.

I learned to drive by sitting on the floor between the front seats of our VW van and watching my mom use the pedals and shifter for about a dozen years. As soon as I turned 15 I got my learner's permit and my dad drove us over to the local cemetery (great place to learn) and told me to get in the driver's seat. I stalled it first attempt to use the clutch, but after that I was fine.... until I got a bit cocky and took a corner too fast and took out a shrub. 🤣

We switched places and dad drove home. Then we tried the Nova with 3 on the tree. I did that pretty well, too. From that point on, my folks made me drive them everywhere we went so I'd get practice.

When it came time for driver's ed at high school, I was pretty good already. It was some huge 4 door car with two couches for seats and an automatic trans. It even had a little lever to adjust the driver's side mirror. OOOoooo. Fancy.

I actually got my first car when I was 13-14. 68 Pontiac Strato-Chief.
350 with a 2 speed auto.
Drove it all over the farm.
One of the best things that summer was after Pa harvested the wheat.
The stubble was as slick as ice. Race into that field and crank the wheel and go into a spin, soil flying past the side window from the tire.
Best thing was learning the limits of the car. Didn't have to worry aboot hitting anything.
When I went for my license I drove like a veteran not some nervous pimple popper.

Took my test in the 1971 F250 4x4 4 speed no power steering - and the PA state trooper had me parallel park at the end of the test too. Passed no issues, as I had been driving trucks and tractors since about 8 when I couldnt reach the clutch so ran the old 57 international truck in first gear only.

I can't remember. But I do remember my parents being absolutely angry.

Brings back memories. My first drive was in an old neighbors VW in MA.

Lots of dirt roads between farms back then, could drive many miles before you would hit a real road (and police).
First time at the wheel, I popped the clutch and the front came up off the ground. Pretty amazing for such a slow car.
That poor car had so much rust, but for a 13 year old, huge fun!

I did not get my license until I was already 18, insurance and other costs kept that away until I started college and needed a car to commute.
