My mom took me out on a local city park parking lot in the snow and showed me how to do donuts, handle a slide, correct it, lose control, etc... good lessons. VW vans are great in the snow.I actually got my first car when I was 13-14. 68 Pontiac Strato-Chief.
350 with a 2 speed auto.
Drove it all over the farm.
One of the best things that summer was after Pa harvested the wheat.
The stubble was as slick as ice. Race into that field and crank the wheel and go into a spin, soil flying past the side window from the tire.
Best thing was learning the limits of the car. Didn't have to worry aboot hitting anything.
When I went for my license I drove like a veteran not some nervous pimple popper.
When it came time to teach our kids how to drive, my wife and I did the same things with them. Impala was front wheel drive with traction and stability control. Pretty good snow car. I'd put the 93 Suburban in 2wd and let them experience that.... those light poles seem to move around on their own.
