Name the car you passed your drivers license in?

I got the use of my folks VW bus with a stick. My friend had the use of his folks VW bus with an automatic. We'd pull up side by side at a light and drag race them..... no one noticed.

The automatic was quicker off the line but the stick had higher top end. And we still held up traffic behind us.

Ha, i have a 1976 vw beetle with a 4 speed, and at full tilt, no one would call it's acceleration "rapid". IIRC, the vw bus uses the same engine, I can't imagine it's speed. A brisk walk comes to mind, but only if you gradually work up to it.

My folks had quite a few buses over the 60s and 70s. The lasted one had an experimental engine in it. My dad did not know this when he bought it from a dealer. It kept having engine troubles. He had to get VW of America involved. Turned out it had some experimental test engine that VW was collaborating with Porche on. Twin 2 barrel carbs. They had the pistons installed upside down and it kept eating internals.

Once they got it straightened out, it was fairly dependable. It could pull the front wheels off the ground from launch and jump a beer can. It could actually keep up with traffic in town, and cruise the highways at a blistering 65, which was 10 over the national speed limit at the time.

My dad had at least 4 buses, a bug, and a karmann ghia. He also had a plymouth station wagon, a couple mustangs, a couple Toyotas, and several chevies over the years.

In my family we had three bugs, including one semi-auto that made the others look fast.
a Karmann Ghia and a Porsche 914. So we were well represented.
The one semi-auto bug lost it's front wheel on an exit ramp once while my brother was driving it, most exciting drive in a bug he ever took.

I think my brother took his driving test in our old family 1972 impala (with the bi-yearly motor mount failures). He got in with his long hair hippy look, the tester had a flat top crew cut. He did pass on his second try though with another tester

Our oldest told us that when she took her driving test, the instructor wanted to see her parallel park, so they drove around until they found a spot. She pulled up next to the parked car, and as she went to back up, the parked car started backing up, and then stopped. They sat there for a bit, and the instructor told her to try it again, and as soon as she started backing up, the parked car started backing up again. It happened a third time, and the instructor told my daughter to go around the block again, and as they left, the instructor flipped off the guy in the parked car and called him an a-hole.

Daughter said it was just like driving with me in the car.

They found a block with one car on it, instructor told her to pretend there was an open spot behind it, she pulled up, backed in parallel to the curb and the instructor said good job.

When they went back to the office, the instructor told her to be more mindful of crosswalks, as she had rolled one, but passed her anyway.
