Nasty Little Wood Ticks

Dan, I'm glad to hear of your anti-tick success. The local chief of police came out to fish a couple of my ponds yesterday. He was pulling off unattached ticks... I gave him the standard "don't use the tick as a hypodermic to inject their gut contents into you" speach and the BIG SELL for permethrin. I had him put some of his removed ticks on my jeans leg. They started up at a good clip climbing my leg. Then they slowed and began to wander becoming aimless in direction not going anywhere in particular and geting RRRREEEEAAAAALLLLLL slow. Sort of a graphic demo.
I think he is convinced. he said he would go to feed store and get the stuff for him, his wife, and grand son. I promised to give him the formula and process for treatment. It was a fun hour or so.

His grandson, 7 year old Mike is going to Arkansas with his baseball team to play in the regional championships and if they win there its off to Florida for the nationals. They have graduated past "T" ball and "coach pitch" and have a pitching machine to do the pitching, it can even through a curve. Anyway Mike couldn't quite get the hang of getting the worm on his hook yet but did cast his own rod and caught his first ever fish all by himself.

Mike was good at catching ticks too. I hope they de-ticked him thoroughly before any bit in. Get informed, take precautions. You can enjoy the outdoors worry free with proper preperation.

Oh by the way Dan, I have been a member of the REI co-op since the 60's before it became the intergalactic headquarters for all the yuppie larvae. It seems like it is a division of Needless Markup (Please no complaints from those Texans who love "T_H_E_I_R store.)

Patrick,

I'm in no hurry as I have a quart which will last me 6 weeks for mosquito control. I will also do a search for the stuff.

Regarding the mum's source this was what the local mosquito sprayer says, likley it's true but also a way to create a nice image for the public.

We have the Lyme Disease issue here in the NE and that has everyone concerned when they have a dead bird, or like last year a horse got it 5 miles from here..

Let me know what Rodney says via separate email - it's in my bio.

Patrick,

Searched the web tonight - Heres a a good un on the topic.

[http://infoventures.com/e-hlth/pestcide/permethr.html] this is a govt site..

Also to get 36.8% stuff for a good price check this out:

[http://www.pestproducts.net/permethrin.htm] $50/Qt for 36.8% or $220 for 5Qts. which this stuff is 3.68 the strength, so your deal $50 per gallon still is better.

Regardng mums, Permethrin is a pyrethroid. It is a synthetic chemical similar to the natural insecticide pyrethrum which comes from the chrysanthemum plant, but it remains effective for longer periods.

Carl, I'll let you know what I find out RE permethrin. I was away all day and made no progress on anything important. My wife had a meeting in the AM which was cancelled but we were not informed. This PM I went to Cattlemens Association dinner meeting primarily to buttonhole the extension agent but he sent his appologies for non attendance via his counterpart from another county. And on and on. I hate wasted days. If I am not going to get anything done I could have a lot more fun doing it.

Carl, the center for disease control in Atlanta and several state health agencies have good sites for ticks/permethrin/mosquitos/diseases carried by both. I don't recall seeing the site with the concentrated permethrin. How it escaped me is a mystery unless it is less than a year old. When the ticks started grossing us out last year I went full-on in the tick issue and thought I basically read everything on the net about ticks and permethrin that was from a reliable or useful source and was in English.

I had seen the Info Venture stuff for the Forrest Service. Pretty technical for many folks' needs but good stuff nevertheless. Lets see if I can summerize: Don't bathe in it. Don't drink it. Don't feed large quantities to pregnant or lactating rats. Don't inhale the vapors of its "inert" ingredients (probably a good idea to not inhale or snort the ert ingredients either.) Don't put it in the aquarium. Don't wash your eyes out with it.

Glad to see it is available for less than $26/8OZ of 13.3%, via the web.

Later, dude

Patrick
