Here's what I know:
Honest people can't imagine things criminals do. The honest mind works differently than the criminal's. A policeman years ago told me they're opportunists, so at your home or garage they'll look for a rock or pipe close by to break in. It's hard for the honest to outsmart a crook because they think differently.
I worked for an alarm company for about 8 years.

I was paid to think like a burgler and find the vulnerabilities.

About that time, the door knobs started showing up that stayed locked from the outside, but allowed you to turn the knob from the inside and exit.

I got really good at popping those locks so I could get back into the place I was installing the alarm system in.

My daughter had one of those style locks on her house. They had something come up, and weren't gonna make it home that night. They needed someone to take care of the dogs, but her husband had pocketed the house key they normally stash.

I was on the phone with her when we realized the key was gone. It flipped her out when I was in the house in under 30 seconds

Thankfully she didn't have the deadbolt latched on the back door.

I saw this online a while back, said hide a key under a rock or carpet, put one there that will go into the lock, but won't open the door.

When my brother bought his house many years ago he put two things on his porch:
A large mixing bowl with "BRUNO" written on it and a medical waste-biohazard container where he keeps spare house key.
Never had a problem.

Many years ago, before Pampers, there were diaper laundering services. Folks used to leave a soiled diaper pail on the porch for pickup. Even though we no longer used it, my folks used to keep a spare key in the diaper pail.

Now days, I don't lock the door and rely on the "Have Gun & Backhoe" sign

I have four six foot sliders and two 36 inch doors in a thousand sq ft house. All I can say is I better not be home if I get broke in to.
If they want it they can get in. Period Probably a risk vs reward!

I knew a guy that had his car stolen. He left the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked when it was stolen. He was honest and told the Insurance claims adjuster about his unlocked car and they didn't cover his loss.
