$25.00 in steel and a welder can produce some fantastic results. Two hundred dollars is alot of money for three pieces of pipe and a couple flat pieces of steel. There are alot of examples on this forum. Good luck.

Not sure what the 45 front looks like.. byut my 1920 had a small bumper flange.. i buzzed a square bumper/guard made from angle iron and perfec metal.. hit it with some blue paint and bolted it to pre-existing holes in the small OEM bumper.. Worked great. Looked so good that when i traded it back to the dealer and offered to remove it as it was non-oem.. owner of the dealership said to leave it on.. it was a good addition.. etc.

I looked at the New Holland Grille Guard and I figured all I would end up doing was to bend it into my grille with the 55DA. It just didn't look sturdy enough so I built my own. It does take some time, but the cost is minimal. Attached are pics of the one I built before and after paint.

Osconda that's a nicely built grill guard. Looks like it hinges forward to lift the hood, how does it lock in the up position?

Pineridge,

In the picture shown with the guard painted you can see two bolts closest to the grille. I have since replaced these with hitch pins. I pull the pins and hinge it forward to open the hood. When I raise it back up I reinstall the 1/2" pins.

I laid out the guard so it would more or less follow the sweep of the front end. I used some foam board (left over wall insulation) to make the pattern for the uprights (1/2" plate). I figured out how tall I wanted the guard to be then started trimming the foam to follow the sweep of the hood. I tried using cardboard but it was too hard to work with.

It would have been nice to have a plasma cutter to cut out the uprights from the plate steel but I resorted to the grinder to clean up the cuts instead.

The brackets the guard is attached are welded directly to the tractor. I was going to drill holes through the brackets to bolt it on instead but drilling the four holes in 1/2" plate meant I was going to have to buy a big drill bit and I was going the cheap route.

Mike, I figure we paid $50 for the grill-guard and $150 for the snazzy latch mechanism. Heck! The grease zerk on it was worth at least $25 just by itself.

Seriously, even if the materials only cost me $50, I would not go through the trouble of design, layout, cutting, welding and painting a grill guard for the $200 I paid for it. It has saved my high-$$$ hood many times.

Nice work, I am jealous.
