I have been wanting a hoist lately and thought I had found one that would work. When I built my garage/shop, I had no idea how much a hoist was or that I could afford one some day. That being the case, my ceilings are about 8'-4" high. I found a hoist that is designed as a portable unit and would work perfect in my garage. It won't lift high, but high enough that you could get under a vehicle on a short stool. The problem is it has a lift capacity of 6000 lbs. I just bought a Dodge 3/4 ton and the curb weight is listed at about 6700 pounds. It seems kind of pointless to have a hoist that won't lift my truck.
The only other style I have found that would work is the drive over style that looks like a giant scissor style lift. Those would be good most of the time but the lift fills up most of the middle of the vehicle, so depending on what you are doing, it would often be in the way.
I've though about adding on to my garage, there is plenty of room, but I don't want to spend that much money just so I can have a hoist. I've also though about raising the ceiling, but once again, the cost doesn't seem worth it.
Any ideas?
