Need a New Computer Any Suggestions?

<font color="green"> I use All Apple Computers. I love them very much, they never give me any problems like my all my friends with PC's. I also have to disagree with people that don't like apple because it's " A PC WORLD" That's a bunch of bull.... There isn't a program that I can't run, or a document that I can't open on an Apple. Period. Whoever thinks that you can't open or run apps from a PC on a Mac doesn't know what they are talking about. I do it everyday. I use computers everyday. Wife has typical office jobs that run PC, everything she can do runs just as good if not better on a Mac vs PC. They are exeptional computers, and lots less headache'. I will never buy anything but a Mac, ever, they last longer, don't outdate as fast, they are very stable, never chrash, and they work the way you work. Longtime Mac User, who has debunked every Myth about you can only do that on a PC user... Jason...

Jason, you forgot to debunk the myth that Apples are S-L-O-W. That is another one I hear all the time. Fact is a typical consumer Apple will outperform a typical consumer Windows machine in virtually every task.

And what about myth that the cost of Apples being SO EXPENSIVE you forgot to debunk that one too. When total cost of ownership is calculated, Apples are less expensive to own and operate, needing far fewer upgrades over time.

And what about viruses? Take a brand new windows machine connect it to the internet and within 20 minutes it will have a virus. So you load up on anti-virus software, set firewalls in place, yada yada yada. Then you pay for the updates to keep the anti-virus current or you end up with spyware and viruses. Take an Apple and surf the internet with virtual freedom. I have anti-virus software on my Apple at work, I have NEVER had the Norton Anti-Virus software warn me of an attack. Our Windows machines get warnings every day.

Am I a happy Apple user? Yup.

That's because the Windows operating system is used by so many more machines -- those that write viruses don't waste their time writing them for the Mac.

Well, let's see here? Programs I use on a daily basis.

Microsoft Word-works with a Apple.
Microsoft Excel-works with a Apple.
Other Various programs am sure that work with the Apple.

Ultra-Site-DOES NOT work with an Apple.
ExpertGps DOES NOT work with an Apple.
Topo Grafix DOES NOT work with an Apple.
My Gps will not connect directly to an Apple.

My brother in law made a bunch of CD's with his Apple containing jpg pictures on them. Not one of them CD's are readable on a PC that we could find. Put the CD's in another Apple and you can read them. The other thing he has never been able to do is send pictures to us via e-mail. I use to think it was AOL causing his problems until none of his CD's wouldn't work.

Now don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with the Apple. It is the right puter for certain people. But it does not work on all programs. Larger programs where developers know they call sell on the Apple will take the time to make them work. But smaller programmers will not. I personally would never have one.

Murph, not wanting to speak for Jason, but my experience with Apples is that while the SAME program may not work on an Apple, I have been able to find the same FUNCTIONALITY with a SIMILAR program to do everything I have ever needed to do. I'm not saying that is what Jason was saying, but it is my experience. Further, if worse comes to worse, you can always run Windows on a Mac inside a window. But personally I've not found the need to do that and my Macs are constantly working with the 30 or so Windows computers and interchanging data, spreadsheets, graphics, etc.

As for you B-I-L who burned the disks, all I can think of is he did something terribly wrong when he saved the files or burned the disk. I've never had that experience. We do all sorts of cross platform work and don't have any real issues.

Bob,
As you see Jason says, " There isn't a program that he can't run". A program called Ultra-Site that I pretty much live on will not run on an Apple and there isn't another program out there that will take it's place. This program is specific to Building Controllers and is developed by the manufacture of the Building Controller. Before I posted my above message I called the manufacture and they said no way, don't even try. I emailed to the people at ExpertGPS and their reply was no. My brother in law can not connect his GPS directly to his Apple and communicate with it. My GPS will not connect directly to an Apple. As far as the CD, I can't help you either because I don't know much about the Apples and never intended nor thought I did. All's I know is he has had his Apple for a long time and through the school system he works at gets a new one every so often. He does take his Apple from school to home also. But I always am hearing his frustration on programs not working or not developed for the Apple and his plan is to buy a PC for at home.

Some people like the Apples and swear by them, and then there is people who don't like them. I have no preference. It is just not for me.

My wife works in a school system with only apple computers and both kids have Apple computers in school. I told them I was seriously considering getting an apple as our next computer and they all said NO!! Sooo back to Dell I guess, I am waiting for another sale, they had 30% off a week ago. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you haven't already, make sure to sign up for their emails, they send out alot of coupon codes...and there are a bunch of sites that outline Dell deals and stackable coupons...in other words, there are better deals than what is apparent on the Dell site

Every Program you mentioned, can in fact work on the Mac. Yes, you can run every PC program on a mac. Virtual PC guarantees 100% PC compatibility. All the programs you've mentioned will work with a Mac, and it will work flawlessly. As far as your brother in law goes, I'm sure he just made a simple mistake trying to burn his CD's. They too are compatible. If anything why didn't the PC recognize a disc full of stanardized Jpegs etc? And even without Virtual PC, I can still open any document on the Mac, run it, save it to a PC format.. There isn't anything that can't be done, trust me, I do it everyday.... I've never been stumped yet... As far as the GPS goes, you just might have a very old Apple, most computers MAC and PC use USB connections, which has become pretty standardized. A newer GPS, with a Newer computer Mac or PC will work. Also Mac OS X, is by far the most stable operating system going on consumer computers, and it is very good a crossing platforms right out of the box.. sounds to me like your Brother in Law is expecting too much from a very old machine. Because everything you've mention for the PC / MAC debate I can do. And I do. I have no problem with people who choose PC's... But I have to be honest, they sure do have a lot more problems using them than people with Macs.. Apple makes the Computer, and they Make the Operating System, it is very seamless. Vs... Microsoft Makes the OS, to work on a hundred Million different gadgets and computers built by a zillion different companies... To me, it's a no brainer...

I guess I don't know what to say. My brother in law gets a new Apple from the school system every year. So it is not old. The developer of Ultra Site told me not to ever hook up a MAC or Apple system to one of their controllers not matter what program or programs you are using or you could corrupt the operating system of the controller. Any cohtroller that has had an Apple system hooked to it voids all warranties on the controller. As far as expert Gps. The developer said No. NowVirtual PC may make that program work on ExpertGps. As far as my GPS, it is a brand new GPSMap60CS. It is only 3 months old and I have never tried hooking it up to an Apple, I can only go by what other people have told me.

Me, I guess I would never have any plans to buy one with the programs that I run. And with that statement I am not bashing the MAC. I do beleive they operate as good as every says they do and I wish Microsoft could better their systems as far as crashes. But with Windows XP and even 2000, I can not remember ever having a crash.
