All I can offer is a recent customer service experience I had with Dell...
Several years ago we purchased a Pentium II 600MHz pc from Dell. It had 128MB of RAM, a 10GB hard drive, etc. State of the art at the time, and the bill came to $2100. One month before the three year warranty expired the unit started smoking. We called for help in getting our files off the hard drive. They told us to forget it; if the computer was smoking we should turn it off and unplug it -- a free replacement was on the way.
The "replacement" was a PIII 1.6MHz with 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. It came with a note apologizing for the fact that an identical replacement was not possible as they didn't have anything that old in stock. And -- get this! -- they refunded $700 as the cost of the free replacement was only $1400!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Needless to say, we've owned Dells ever since. Pete
