i,m guessing that a submersible pump is better that a ground level??so what i think ive learned is to get a gould submersible and a 100-300 gal holding tank and a pressure tank.we wont know what the well will flow till after its drilled right?

Make your decisions after you know how the well preforms and what your personal requirements are.

Remember pressure tanks can come in very large sizes and be parallel in hooking up eliminating the need for the pump from the holding tank to the pressure tank.

BWS,

Since your well is only 100 ft or so deep a ground level pump might work but space requirements should be considered. Goulds makes both so check their website to become informed, then call a local well company or a plumber who does this regularly. A little knowledge goes a long way.

I am not sure you will need a big storage tank and its associated pump and plumbing, in addition to the pressure tank. That will depend on your well's recovery rate and what you plan to use water for. A 50 or so gallon pressure tank should be way more than enough for a normal residential use.

Here in New England for a drilled well you can figure on about $8 per foot for drilling, another $6-$8 per foot for casing (needed only until you hit bedrock), and another $1500-$2500 for pump/pressure tank installation depending on what you choose.

i am learning alot.seems these well guys dont like giving out info on systems.i guess they expect you to know.would a large pressure tank work as a storage tank.i know a storage tank is in case your well runs dry so maybee i dont need this?

Any reputable, long established well driller will be more than happy to answer any of your questions regardless of your level of knowledge. If they can't or won't then find someone else. You should also get a complete list of materials to be used, including manufacturers and models of pumps, tanks, etc. They should be able to discuss with you the pros and cons of the various types of installations.

Let your fingers do the walking and use the Yellow Pages. There must be more than one well driller in your area. Don't choose on price alone, as with tractors, choose a good dealer (driller) you can be comfortable with.

A local well driller here in NH has a nice web site that has some good information. Take a look. If you can find someone like these people you will be ok.

If you have a very low flow rate well and require lots of water at one time then storage volume is required. There is no difference between a storage tank and pressure tank that holds the same amount of water other than the tank construction. There will be one less pump and one less set of pump controls. The pump should be sized for an output that is less than the well flow rate.

Slamfire, well drilling is very expensive in my area, perhaps because there are so many rural water systems that wells aren't in that great a demand, so the ones that drilll wells charge an arm and a leg and have little competition.

I coulda had a 250 foot well in a more shallow formation for under $10K, but was told there was much more liklihood that the water would contain a considerable amount of iron, so opted for the deeper one. I'm happy with the water - very soft and tasty.
