Put together and tested. She works. Selected lever is a little stiff, but I didn't pack it with grease either. Don't know how easily it operated before either.

I left the ears where the handle mounts a little more robust. The oem pin is too short. I'll send the shoulder bolt and lock nut along with it. And I will leave the grease zerk out of the tube since it needs to be out to assemble.

Don't forget to pack it with grease.

LD1,

Totally awesome !

Will do, on lubing her up before I put it back in service.

Good deal on leaving the ears for the pin/handle a little more "robust" ... rather have it that way than the other.

As far as being a little tight, I'm sure it will loosen up with time and use.

You have my profound thanks.

And thanks to the other folks who so graciously offered to help ... all you guys embody what's best about TBN: members helping other members.

Compliments on the work/workmanship and assist, from a fellow manual mill/lathe hand. tog

Thanks for the compliments all.

Quality in this case is limited by the quality of the mill. Its a wore out bridgeport step-pulley. It moves around ALOT if trying to hog a sizable bite. Wouldnt want to use it for any real precision or delicate work, but great for things like this.

rswyan....shipped it back out today. I think you said you shipped on tuesday?? I got it thurs?....so if its the same 2-days to return, you should see it monday. Let me know how it works out when it arrives. I didnt have any good detailing tools at my disposal. It its still too stiff for you with some grease, if you have some small stones and a die grinder, polishing up the spring pocket should help. But I would rather error on the tight side than the loose side and not have the lever stay. It would act like a broken ratchet at that point.

Took me a bit longer than I expected to get it back on.

I started on it last night and noticed that the bottom threads in the barrel I supplied LD were pooched. I couldn't remember earlier, but now that I've seen it again I think that was the failure that finally caused me to replace it.

By that time it was pretty late (and dark out) and I didn't have a clear spot in the shop to pull the tractor into and I was tired anyways so I just waited for daylight this morning to do it.

Anyways, this morning I took the barrel off the one that was on the tractor (whose threads weren't pooched), cleaned it up, stuck everything back together and then took it down to the house and shot the barrel full of grease:

Seems to work great !

Sweet:thumbsup:

Does the lever to reverse direction seem okay? same as before? or a little stiffer?

The direction lever seems ok ... I'd say it's a good bit stiffer from what I can recall ... but in my book that's a good thing.

It isn't real hard to reverse direction or anything like that, but ya do gotta grab both sides of the lever to do it.

I'm liking it ... :D

Glad it works to your liking. Hopefully it last longer than the cast aluminum OEM part. When you first said "inferior cast metal" in your OP, I was just assuming you were talking about cast iron. Cast aluminum is not the right material for that application.

I dont even think I'd trust aluminum billet
