Bird, I'm sure you've given that tiller a good workout./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif How about rocks in the soil. Got any? The first time that big Rotovater got used it pulled up one of our good crop of ol' VT field stone about the size of a bowling bowl. Damaged one of the sheetmetal shrouds around the tines so bad it had to be replaced.

My Woods GT52 weighs 397#. Seems heavy enough to keep from bouncing, even in hard ground. I haven't hit many large rocks though.

DFB, I've used the tiller when some of this clay was hard as a rock (and made the tiller bounce up and down), I've tilled up tree roots, and once I found a brick sidewalk under about an inch of dirt that the new owner of the property didn't know was there, but NO rocks. There aren't any on my property, or my brother's place, that weren't hauled in.

Bird,

What problems if any does a 40 inch tiller present when your tractor is wider? Do you make your rows 40 in apart so you can walk in the tire tracks? Do you run something, cultivator whatever after you till? Right now I go from till (walk behind) to hand rake then plant. The reason I ask, I think a 40 inch tiller is probably about all my B21 can handle, it is a little whimpy @ the PTO, 13.5 hp

Twinkle Toes, when I bought the 40" tiller, I had a B7100 (40" outside rear tread - just right). I planted my rows 5' apart and could cultivate by tilling between the rows. Now that I have a B2710 with 54" rear tread, I offset the tiller to the right to cover the right track. Then I planted my rows only 4' apart and cultivated between the rows with a one-row (6 shanked) cultivator by straddling the rows until the plants get too big to drive over them with the tractor. The cultivator I use came from Tractor Supply Co. (item #21-28105) and I replaced the narrow spring shanks with 6" field sweeps (items #10-05508, 10-05516, and 10-05524). I also add about 110 pounds of weight to the cultivator when I use it (two pieces of railroad track I have).

Thanks Bird, offset works for me. Am I right on the 13.5hp PTO and 40"? Would your B7100 handle the 60" tiller?

DFB,
Would Hard Rock Farm be the nickname or the true name, for thats unique to here of a farm which such a name around these parts....I like the name. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
Thats for sure if we could sell our rocks we could give Bill Gates a run for his worth. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Not sure about Maine laws, but in NH you better not get caught removing stones from any stone wall not unless its on your property, and I'm still surprise of the people who do so. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Yep thats the Old Man...I'm going to guess you snap that picture at the end of the walk path down by the pond....darn that water cold. [shockd]
Ever walk the path to the top of the Old Man of the Mountain..need a <font color=red>SLOW<font color=red><font color=black> steady pace..yikes

Only took my m/c to the top of Mountain Washington once...don't try this Labor Day weekend..crowded & tad more that chilly. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

37 degree and cloudly over here, and calling for snow turning to rain by morning...January thaw maybe.
