The best thin sheetmetal rods I have ever seen (sold) are called MG Easy Strike. You can run them in a lay down angle and they stay lit. Work very well for body work if you only have a stick welder. Mig and tig are still better. Try some ESAB .023 Easy Grind. Loaded with Silicon..No AWS class but welds flat on 24ga and grinds very easy.

i believe I have used something called easystrike. I swear, if it's the same product.. you could strike an arc and lay a bead on a piece of damp cardboard.. :) used them on a 30/70a CH baby stick welder in either 1/16 or 5/64.. don't recall which...

Hmmm, damp cardboard. I might have a need for something like that

I've got some need for welding on thin steel so all of this is great info!

Though most advise against the 3/32 6011 rods, I like them because they start easier than the 70 series rods, and require less prep work as far as rust and paint. The amperages mentioned by most seem a little hot for my tastes, but it has been a while since I ran that small of rod. If the O/P has the rods, and takes a little time, he can get it down. Practice makes perfect, or at least tolerable.

I've seen a lot of different advice. I think it comes down to each person's individual technique and how they handle the weld pool. Some like the fast freeze, some like the fast flow. Thanks for your input.

I run them at about 70-75 amps DC, low arc force, 6010 port, nice stack of dimes look.

Shops that I have worked at bulding metal door frames out of 16 ga (1/16") 200 frames a day will only use 6013 3/32 lincoln rods and they have tried everything. These frames are used in schools hospitals and most commercial buldings.
