Been a long time. Read through all responses back in the day. Tried a lot of things by borrowing from friends or using equipment at their place. Really couldn稚 find anything that I was convinced would work. Just kept on mowing that hillside with my D150.
Got some chains for it and that really helped. Was going well until .. the chains burned up the tranny. Had to replace the tranny and remove the chains. Almost flipped it on the hill one day and I had had all I would stand. With no plan, I sold the JD D160. Then, I began my search again.
I decided I would buy the Cub Cadet Pro Z 148S. Thatç—´ a commercial zero turn with a steering wheel. I called all over the western US and nobody had one of these in stock. I tried to get one shipped. No go. I tried everything and simply could not buy one of these in California. Tried Nevada. No go. Tried Oregon. There was a place that would sell me one, but they didn稚 have any. Finally got in touch with someone with half a brain at Cub Cadet. Was informed that they don稚 sell that tractor in CA because weæ±*e enviro-Nazis in this state and the machine isn稚 CARB compliant.
Found a Simplicity online. Standard Garden type tractor, but 4WD and a mowing speed of like 6mph. Got in touch with some good l boys at Simplicity. Nope .... won稚 sell in CA. Not CARB compliant either. One fine gentleman at Simplicity suggested I leave California and move to the United States so that I can own a decent piece of equipment. I would have been pissed at him if he wasn稚 right.
Long story short, it was evident that I would need to buy something sight unseen. Took a leap of faith and went back to the Oregon shop via phone and ordered the Pro Z 148s for $6,799.00. Hey!!! No tax in Oregon!!!!
Three weeks later, it arrived in their shop. My cousin in Oregon picked it up for me, 都muggled it into California and brought it to one of his shops in Redding where I picked it up.
I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THIS MACHINE!!!! Thatç—´ not true. I could always be happier. You know what I mean though.
This thing chews up hills like theyæ±*e nothing. Mowing speed as fast as 9mph. Blade speed is 18k. Itç—´ unbelievable.
If I had to complain, and I do ... I壇 say two things I am not 110% happy with.
1) Deck is rigid. No flex. You can adjust it obviously, but there痴 no lean with the contour or anything. Nothing really to complain about, but on some funky curves, you don稚 get a nice tight to the ground cut.
2) Rides rough. No suspension. Meant for golf courses and manicured lawns.
HEAVY DUTY!!! Seriously heavy duty. The best part is ... what took me 6-6.5 hours + on my JD D160, I can mow in 2 1/2 hours on this thing. I mow my place so framin fast that I致e started mowing the neighbor痴 frontages as well.
If you have hills, this thing is a reasonably priced solution. Very, VERY happy with it.
