I came here for advice on a reasonably priced piece of equipment to get a job done. Instead, you all convince me to spend a ton of money. OK, fine. I will.

Don't be surprised if my wife comes on here in a few weeks all angry that she's not getting new couches or something and yells at you guys.

So we decide we need a new tractor. I pick the PowerTrac PT425, two buckets, pallet forks, 60" finish mower, 48" brush cutter, 60" power angle snow plow, loading ramps, for less than $13,000 delivered to a truck terminal in our town from VA. Wife agrees. We go to the credit union to sit down with the loan officer.

Loan Officer asks, "How much will you need?".
I look at my wife and say "About $13,000. Is that O.K.?"
She nods her head yes, looks at the loan officer and says, "We'll need $26,000 because I'm getting a car."

You know, I've got the perfect solution for you.....

Terraced planters with ground cover and flowers....

Septic system. That entire sloped hillside is my septic system. I've thought about a small vineyard. But, the idea of making wine with grapes grown with the assistance of my family fecal matter kinda killed it for me. Just ripped out the last tree on the hillside because the roots were getting into the system. Otherwise, great idea.

Then groundcover would be my next choice. Never mow again.

I would vote for a lightly used small kubota 4x4 with a finishing mower behind it. I have an L2501, (bigger frame model than you need),and a 3 point/ 5' finishing mower, also called a grooming mower. If you look at a finishing mower, it runs on four wheels so scalping is not really an issue. Mine cuts the grass just like a golf course. You can adjust the four wheels up or down by moving some washer like do-dads. Only takes about 5 minutes to adjust them all. With a small tractor, you would probably want a 4' grooming mower behind it. Unless the mower is a very new model and not used much, I would just get a new one for around 1500 or so. Small Tractor lightly used....around 7K-9K. 4x4 .... priceless on steep hills. Loaded tires will do you well. You would want the turf tires all the way around. Hope this helps a little. Very nice place too!

Oh and when you mentioned about mowing in the winter, it sort of threw me for a moment. I was thinking that you much be in the land of the Aussies. When I saw it is in California, it made more sense.

Metro,
New here, but I'm compelled to join just to give you another option. I've used it on my own property for the first 3 or 4 years my wife and I lived where we do. Doesn't have nearly the hills that you do, but it worked well for us until just this year when the Mrs upgraded me for father's day to a ZTR. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you could/should look into an ATV with a pull behind finish mower. I don't know if or what's available in your area, but a used 4x4 atv can be picked up pretty inexpensively and a brand new 60" wide pull behind can be had for around 1800-2500 depend on how big and what kind of bells you want. I've got the 48" version myself, which sounds like you might be in to as well, but they do come as large as 60". Available in both a "rough cut" and "finish cut" style. Not by any means telling you how to spend your hard earned green and I might get some heat from the guys here as its not a "tractor", and cause it's my first post with no introduction. However, it's another option that not many people think about and I haven't yet seen it posted here.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about.

Welcome Minnesota. Nothing wrong with alternative ideas.

I have to admit that Metro gave up way to easy and he may yet return with another batch of determination and your idea could be a "winner".

Personally an atv would seem a little too "fun" and would be like my biking and jet ski days. How do you keep from using the throttle a little to fast lol.

OK, back to the original question ... what can I mow this with for under $1,000.00?
