Luke,
Have you considered a stand that simply pivots down on a pin joint? I have one on a cheap grader blade for my garden tractor. I only use it a few times a year and it stays in place without falling down.

Unfortunately, almost nowhere I work is flat. This rake is heavy enough I don't want to worry about it falling over when set on uneven ground.

The bolt is only there to set the rake on the ground right before you disconnect it. You'd take the bolt out after that. It would be pretty hard to assemble this system by yourself without something to hold the leg in temporarily.

That makes sense. How would you keep it from binding in the hole once the rake weight (heavy) was on it?

You'd put a 1/4" pin in a 1/2 hole. And design it so that the hole that the pipe goes into bottoms out before the pin gets tight.

So I had my 3 and 5 year old boys by myself today which means no seat time. I wanted to get something done in the shop they could "help" me with. That means no welding and limited grinding.

So I set about to cobble together a 'snap-over-center' kickstand with what I had on-hand. (turned out the screen door spring I had was not heavy enough and I had to get one at TSC)

The axel is a 1/2" gr8 bolt tapped into the 3/8" frame sidewall. I'm sure this is a weak point but as I said I could not weld today so we'll see.

Pretty cool

I'd be a little worried about your kids (or others) climbing on or bumping it and having it injure themselves. Or is this not physically possible with the leg angle/weight ratio?

Thanks.

I tried and couldn't but force it over. I guess it could fatigue and break at some point but our parenting philosophy is that kind of risk is part of life.
