I'm trying to make some realistic comparisons to the DirecWay 4000 systems like the one that I am currently using to the newer DirecWay 6000 series systems. If you are using the 6000 series and would be so kind as to run a bandwidth speed check on at least two different computers sharing the satellite connection using the bandwidth speed test that I have supplied I would really appreciate hearing your results. speed test

Thanks! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Since my connection is shared via WiFi, I don't see the need to run on 2 machines. I get the same results more or less.

Here goes.
Speed

594.1 kilobits per second
Communications 594.1 kilobits per second
Storage 72.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 14.1 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

Are you saying that your other computers do not share your satellite connection via WiFi or that you don't think there is a difference in the computer speeds between the two?

There is a big difference here sharing the connection via a wired network and this is what I'm trying to actually compare.

On my DirecWay 4000 system the modem is connected to one computer via a USB connection. Then all other computers are shared via a wired network. The computer that has the USB connection must remain on all the time in order for sharing to take place. The host computer is fast, the client computers are lacking in speed.

I have never seen a 6000 system but I suspect that all computers are connected directly to the modem so that any computer may share the satellite connection fully independent of one another.

My 6000 terminal is connected directly to my Linksys WiFi (G) router. All my PC use the WiFi network to connect to the router. No PC is directly connected to the 6000. I access the 6000 via my browser when I want/need to.

Because the WiFi network operates at 54 Megabits/second, the 'chokepoint' therefore is the speed of the 6000, so all the computers have the same performance.

The only issue that comes up (like once a month) is that the router and 6000 somehow get out of whack. Cycling the power seems to cure it. This may be related to the router. I don't know, but I read something today which suggests a firmware problem in my router.

There is a website which is real useful with respect to Direcway set ups. I'll try remember to post a link tonight when I get home.

You might want to go here and read some stuff before upgrading to the 6000 the consenus is that the 4000 is faster. The advandage of the 6000 however is that it appears to be easier to network.

I have a 6000 things have really been slow the fast few weeks as direcway upgraded all the software on the 6000's and seemed to run into some sort of glitch at the NOC which brought many peoples internet to almost a stop. They appear to have it partially fixed but people are still complaining.

Maybe the 6000 is slower, but its fast enough for me. 500 kbps is a lot faster than dial up was, and the network is always on (except in bad weather) and I don't have to leave a PC on.

I have 5 systems sharing the connection on the network. For me, if networking wasn't straightforeward (or a kludge, like the 4000 is) I wouldn't have gone with it, simple as that.

dslreports was the website I was thinking of, by the way.

Guys thanks so much for suppling the links. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner but it seems that I'm down with the flu and I'm not moving too fast right now. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif There is lots of interesting and useful information at the Broadband web site and I'm sure it will have some answers to my many questions.

Employing the registry tweaks listed at DSLReports, you should be able to make the speeds the same on all PC's on a wired network. When I had the 4000 system, I did those tweaks and saw no difference in speeds from PC to PC.
