Use the search function Willl, its your friend.

Been trying, went through all of Roberts threads that he started. Can't find it.

The list that comes up when I search for all posts he replied to is quite large.

I guess I need a link. :(

I can see quite fine. Which of those quotes were 'first hand' ?

RichNJKubota, dieselsmith, tractorracer17, AndyMa, and Robert in NY all appear to be first hand accounts to me. Since I didn't search very hard, I'm confident someone more motivated could find plenty more. You know, I've never seen anyone who was maimed by getting tangled up in a rotating PTO shaft, but that doesn't mean it's never happened.

So ar eyou guys saying that ALL 3pt. hoes have to possiblity of breaking the tractor in half or that only 3pt hoes without a subframe have that possibility?

from what I gather from these posts a subframe is tracotr spcific which I pretty much guessed and that MOST ( not all) 3 pt backhoes are universal fit to these subframes. Is this correct?

Forgive our dog and pony show going on in your thread.

Today, if you were to go to your local tractor dealer and purchase a new tractor with a backhoe, overwhelmingly, they will be selling you a subframe mounted backhoe. The reason is, over the years, there have been enough tractors damaged by three point hoes to warrant selling them this way.

Certainly, the odds are against a three point hoe damaging your tractor, but I would still advise you to purchase a subframe mounted backhoe. As an example, when I was purchasing the subframe for my Woods BH80X, the price difference between the subframe and a three point mount was approximately $800. To me, it didn't make sense to NOT get the subframe mount. Your mileage may vary.

It's possible that it may be a good way to sell you a more expensive one, I'm thinking..

It's also possible that it's a way to keep from having to warrant broken tractors from the unsupported stresses.

I've seen broken tractors using subframe mounted hoes. Owners manuals of construction TLB's typically call for a complete inspection of all structures at 500 hour intervals and weld all cracks found - and cracks are often found. BH's inflict a lot of stress and damage even with a sub-frame. Surely, you don't think that REMOVING the sub-frame makes the tractor/hoe stronger?

You see any stiches on my forehead? I try not to say totally stupid stuff.:D

I might as well weigh in, too.

I purchased a Woods 3PH backhoe for my Kubota L3130 two years ago _from a Kubota dealer_ and he assured me I would have no problem with my tractor cracking in half or the backhoe's toplink breaking and crushing me. He said that was a problem on smaller tractors. I was willing to go the sub frame route, he had those, too, but I took it on his experience and suggestion that it wasn't necessary.
All anyone can do is listen (or read), weigh the info and do what we are comfortable with.

Call up your color dealer of choice and ask if they warranty tractors with 3pt hoes. Most (if not all) no longer do. If it's not a problem, why?

I think the only risk is if you have a backhoe that is not well matched to your tractor. Most dealers will sell you a 3ph backhoe if it is properly paired to the tractor. They may not want to warranty one if you go off on your own and purchase the bh.

What's the height issue with a sub-frame? If you're cultivating crops I would think that would come into play.

Jake,
On my New Holland subframe BH, the ground clearance is reduced by about 4" with the subframe/BH off of the tractor. The center, rear subframe carrier plate mounted below the PTO shaft is where the clearance is lost.

Your other question about the 3pt function - with the hoe mounted, the 3pt is inoperable, hoe unmounted it works as normal. This is due to the way the hydraulics are plumbed. There is no room to use the 3pt with the hoe on the tractor anyways and probably unsafe if it could be operated.

Dave.

Yeah, I figured you wouldn't want the hoe on in the garden.. but the sub-frame might stop a person from cultivating, is what I was thinking. (a reason to go with a 3 point BH)
