Need Help Deciding Between Kubota BX23S and LS MT125

Again I see a post concerning tax evasion buying a **** tractor out of state. The last thing we need is the tax police on this forum. If you don't register a tractor, buy it out of state and they deliver it to at least the border and agree not to accept sales tax due to out of state sale then who cares.. The Federal Government doesn't need to take more money than they already do for something that is not registered and NOT intended for wearing out the roads..

Then I guess LS mt125 was incorrect about the tax situation in NM.

ETA - It was not LS mt125 who mentioned sales tax for out of state purchases.

BUT ... I did some Googling. You might want to look into the applicability of the Compensating Tax:

New Mexico also has a “Compensating Tax,” which – aside from its name – is virtually identical to use taxes in other states. The Compensating Tax is levied on whomever exercises ownership rights over taxable property in the state (usually the purchaser) and is based on the market value of the goods purchased.

Since it is "virtually identical to use taxes in other states" it is the same as the "use tax" in Vermont. We have to pay the difference between what sales tax was paid (if any) to the state where something was purchased and what the tax would be in Vermont. If you did pay sales tax in the other state that is equal to or greater than the Vermont sales tax, no additional tax is owed. Sounds like since a dealer in a different state would not have paid the gross receipts tax to NM, the NM resident that purchase the item is on the hook for the 5.125% compensating tax.

In Vermont, and I think HIGHLY unfair, you also have to pay "use tax" on the value of a car you bring into the state even if you lived in a different state when you bought it and paid sales tax on it at the time. Doesn't matter if you have owned the car for years. :mur: I lucked out when I moved here in 1979, the car tax was "on hiatus" while they decided if it was legal or not. Somehow someone decided it was not double taxation (how????!!!) and brought it back in 1980.

So, IF YOU GO BACK AND READ THE POST PROPERLY, IT WAS NOT I, WHO HAD MENTIONED ANY STATE TAX, AND I DON'T APPRECIATE SAYING THAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT NOT PAYING TAX. Thank you.

1. The federal government does not have a general sales tax.
2. General taxes are not related to transportation or road use.

My new LS 4150 has been great. But so has the dealer. No problems. I would at least place some importance on the dealer. You never know when you may need him for warranty. Both appears to be good tractor.

Today is Monday, D-Day, and I made a decision to go with the KUBOTA BX23S TLB with a deluxe canopy, work lights and a chain hook on the front bucket, no quick attach because I don't want to lose lift capacity and I don't need anything on the front but the loader. I may get bucket forks later for light duty stuff.

The main reasons (not all of them) for going with the Kubota despite the fact I will be paying a little more than 2K compared to the LS are:

1. I believe this one will be as bullet proof as the one I had before. I've owned a BX25 for 6 years prior and the only issue I had was that mice ate through one of the hoses. I did my
own maintenance i.e. 50 hours, 100 hours, wash/wax etc.
2. The Kubota seems to be a bit more refined than the LS. The LS is closer to the BX25 than it is to the BX23S.
3. I did not like the rear wheels of the LS sticking out beyond the rear fenders (important safety issue for me).
4. I can add a factory CAB later if I want (I absolutely don't need it but it might be cool (no pun intended)! They look and function awesome from what I've seen on Youtube.
5. Resale: It cost me $2500 to own the equipment for six years (not counting maintenance). I sold it for that much less than what I bought it for brand new! It cost me less than a
dollar a day!

The dealer I am buying from is 200 miles away and I have a local Kubota dealer 30 minutes away for service if needed. It was 2K less going with the out of State dealer.

I am waiting for the final paper to sign and I believe delivery will be this week (Wednesday)!

Sounds like you are buying the tractor you like best, that's all that matters, good luck with it..

There has been some discussion on other threads about some dealers balking at servicing machines they did not sell. Hopefully you won't have that bad fortune.
